chapter 9 part 1

"What do you mean the band cancelled." I hissed at a quivering classmate, who looked absolutely terrified. I already had my outfit on and was currently setting up the dance with the others and was furious. It seems nothing could be done right around here. Nana mizuki couldn't make it for a song or two, the band we'd booked was cancelled and we didn't even have a D.J since apparently it wasn't 'in the budget'. I ran a frustrated hand through my hair but tried not to mess it up and started mumbling in merlish, throwing out swear words everywhere.

"Um, what is she saying?" Hanabusa whispered to Kain who shrugged. Luckily Rima and Senri were all for keeping my secret so they hadn't told anyone in the night class about my being a mermaid as long as I promised not to take their hearts. It was a hard bargain, but it won out in the end and I promised grudgingly. Rima threw me a pocky stick and I caught in my mouth and started to chew it.

"What language are you speaking?" She asked boredly.

"Merlish. Language of the mer. What am I going to do? The band has cancelled, we don't have a proper DJ and the only choice I have is to sing which is definitely not a choice." I huffed. Rima's eyes lit up with the first curiosity I've ever seen in her.

"You sing?" She asks and I roll my eyes.

"I'm a mermaid of course I sing. Not all myths are wrong you know." I said, sounding a little more outraged than I'd intended to.

"This I have to see. Sing." She ordered and I pouted.

"I do not wish too." I said stubbornly.

"But you won't have any music and the dance will be a catastrophe." Senri piped in with a sigh. I bit my lip, searching the room. It seemed no one was truly paying attention to our conversation and so I sighed. Day class girls will be here in a minute. Mumbling in Merlish again, I walked up to the stage I'd had all set up and searched through the Ipod for a karaoke song to play. Finally everyone arrived, the headmaster said his opening words and I turned to the group of people.

"Band cancelled, I'm your only other option." I said into the microphone bluntly and then I turned on the music. I grabbed the mic and gave Rima a pissed off look and then started to sing.

I watched the crowd, and despite my love of attention, I hated it now. I felt self-conscious whenever I used my voice. I scanned my eyes over them and found many of the night class members paying close attention, Kaname included.

I was getting into the song and I started to smile a little as I sang. Despite my uneasiness singing in front of people I thoroughly enjoyed singing and found myself letting go and twirling and dancing around the stage. People started to dance to the music, cheering or singing along.

I was full out smiling now, and holding back giggles. It'd been so long since I'd sang. I didn't realize how much I'd missed it. It was often considered the only true good thing about a mermaid.

only the original shall eventually come to shine

repelling the unseen energy

I hardly noticed that the words weren't from the actual song and that I was deviating slightly.
