Truth be told, even though the last issue wasn't the ending I intended from the start, it is the ending I chose in the end. One Last Game wasn't meant to just be a love story, or a Danganronpa story, it was meant to be an exploration of trauma while I myself was finally choosing to confront my own. Breaking it all down, Kokichi represented Shuichi's regrets and guilt, a relationship he missed out on and lost the chance at with Kokichi's death. Regret and guilt often go hand in hand with trauma, lost opportunities, mistakes, and what we sometimes may see as failures. The characters being thrown into another killing game represents how trauma may sometimes feel inescapable, and reliving traumatic experiences. Now, bringing it to the ending, the ambiguous ending was meant to show the idea that, the only way to move forward is by facing the past, while everyone working together was meant to tell the message that you can't face it alone, and need you need people who support you by your side. Finally, the return of Kiibo represents hope, and how hope can help get you through it.
