Amaia
On the other hand
Sometimes did believe
In those sorts of things
"Cats bring great luck"
She'd tell Kai
When it was just the two of them
"They keep the mice at bay and the food rations high"
Kai shook her head
And knew that's just what happens when you have cats on board
There's no luck in it at all
But she admired Amaia
And thought the patchy grey tabby that roamed below decks was adorable
It was Amaia's cat
And hers alone
It stayed away from the rest of the crew
Except Kai
She was the only other one
Allowed to go near it
Pet it
Feed it
It made Kai feel special in some sort of way
Amaia also believed
Birds brought good luck
Corvids especially
"Always be kind to them"
She'd tell Kai on late nights as they took care of the ship
"They remember kindness"
"They also remember cruelty"
"So always be kind"
Kai took the lesson to heart
And just those little words
From Amaia
Made pieces of a puzzle she didn't knew existed
Make sense
The crows
The ravens
They were always kind in return to Amaia
Every city they stopped in
Even ones on the open sea
Seemed to know her
And they were always kind
Maybe
Kai did believe
In superstitions
And luck, too
