Luke is frustrated. He stares at the paper in front of him, which is smudged a permanent gray from all the times he wrote something only to erase it again. He just can't get the wording right for this one lyric. Songwriting has always been a part of his life, he'd done it more times than he could remember. Why is he having so much trouble now?
Luke squints at the paper. I got a spark in me... what rhymes with me? I something something free? I have climbed a tree? I have the songwriting ability of someone who is three? Luke slams the notebook shut, annoyed, and taps it absentmindedly against his leg. He'd go ask one of the guys or Julie for help, but Julie's at some music practice for school and Luke had promised he would impress with this song, so he can't exactly go around begging for help now.
Luke opens the notebook and stares at the paper again, but his brain has officially decided to stop functioning for the night and he can barely read what he's written. The letters swim in front of his eyes, loopy and confusing like that time Alex had attempted to learn how to skateboard so he could impress Willie. So funny. But so not helping him write this song.
Eventually, Luke's had enough and he poofs out of the studio into the street outside Julie's house. Night has just begun to fall, and the inky darkness drenches every shape as far as the eye can see. Luke walks distractedly down the street, taking in the different houses and walkways as he goes. He's not sure quite where he's going until his feet stop in front of one particular driveway and he realizes where he is.
Y/N's house. He's at Y/N's house. Y/N, one of Julie's best friends, who has been so nice and friendly that Luke's pretty sure she's an angel in disguise. There's no way someone could ever be that perfect, right? He can see her now, her silhouette outlined by the golden glow pouring out of her window. She's frowning over something on her desk, probably homework.
Luke poofs up to the balcony outside her window, rapping on it lightly with his knuckles. Y/N's head flies up, startled, then she breaks into a grin when she sees him and motions for Luke to come in. Luke walks through the glass, turning to flop onto her bed. Y/N laughs at him, but the sound is pure and happy instead of mocking.
"What's up with you?" Luke props his head up on his hand, glancing over when he hears the question. "Annoyed, mainly. I can't get this one lyric right, no matter how hard I try." Y/N frowns, coming over to sit on the bed next to him. "I hate that. Do you have it with you?" Luke nods, pulling the notebook out and setting it on the bed in between them. He points to the incomplete line. "That's it. I just can't figure out what to say."
Y/N considers the line, a slight wrinkle appearing in her brow as she concentrates. "So what's the song supposed to be about? Like, is it a happy song? Inspirational?" She looks over at him, a broad grin stretching across her face. "Is it a love song?" Luke groans, swatting Y/N's shoulder in mock annoyance. "No, it's not, thank you very much. I guess it's a happy song. We wanted something to celebrate the fact that Julie's a part of the band now, and that we can play as one to whoever's there to listen."
Y/N nods slowly. "What about 'I got a spark in me, hands up if you can see?' You know, like a crowd would have its hands up when they listen to music?" Luke looks over her shoulder at the notebook, considering the melody of that particular line. "Wait, that sounds really good." He flashes her a confused grin. "How'd you do that so fast? I've been thinking about this for like forever!" Y/N smiles at him, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear so she can look back at the notebook again. "I've written a few songs before. Guess I have some practice."
Luke instantly sat up, intrigued, and he eventually convinced Y/N to show him some of her songs. They were amazing, of course, just like her, and he ended up staying far longer than he had intended just going over lyrics with her. He wishes he could have been there forever, tucked away inside that one moment with the two of them curled up so close, talking about everything and nothing like there had never been anything more important than the two of them.
