Jaq knew they'd probably keep her busy the rest of the afternoon and evening. He glanced over at the dress, placing a hand over his mouth in contemplation. Perhaps a bit of his help was in order?

Jaq followed [Name] not too long after the sisters had called. The two girls were already arguing, having already changed into their undergowns to prepare for the ball when Jaq and [Name] made it down to the corridor. Random fabric, shoes, and dresses were strewn about the floor as the two reamed each other out.
"This old dress is hideous!" Anastasia cried out, stomping her heel on the floor as she looked down at the maroon-colored mess in her hands. She noticed [Name] making her way towards them and shoved past Drizella, only to get shoved aside by Drizella.
"[Name], take my dress and mend the buttons!" Drizella ordered, throwing her dress into [Name]'s hands.
"[Name], take this," Anastasia laid out a different dress, "and press it, too. And ruffle the skirt, would you? And don't forget about my slippers!"
"And, [Name]," the stepmother sneered, "when you're through, and before you begin your regular work, I also have a few things."
[Name] bowed her head respectfully without a word, taking the two dresses down to the washroom with a sad look upon her face. Jaq felt terrible and immediately set his sights on the dresses laid about the floor. So putting on a fake smile, he stepped forward.
"Ladies," Jaq called out, "since these dresses are of no use, I can throw them out. A bit of summer cleaning, perhaps?"
"Oh, yes! And take these pearls!" Drizella said, throwing a box of pearls into Jaq's hands.
"And these stupid things!" Anastasia said as she threw a few pairs of slippers.
The two sisters picked up their arguing again, seemingly over nothing, and vanished into their rooms. Jaq's arms were overflowing with all of the fabric, jewelry, and shoes that piled up. He chuckled nervously, and with that, he walked away happily with his newfound supplies up to his quarters...

The next day wasn't very different from the day before, it was work left and right for [Name]. Stitch this and that, shine these, fix this, do my hair, run my bathwater, there was always something they needed. Not to mention she still had other daily work to get done. She hadn't gone up to her room that night either. Instead, she'd slept in the downstairs kitchen near the farm so that she could get right to work as soon as possible.
Yet still, she found no time to herself, and by the time she did, it was already nightfall. In the upstairs window by the corridor, she could see the carriage making its way up the hill to their home.
She knocked on her stepmother's bedroom door with a quiet but firm, "The carriage is almost here."
As [Name] turned away to leave, her stepmother called out, almost mockingly, "Why, [Name], you're not ready, child."
[Name] clenched her broom, fighting back the lump in her throat. "I'm not going."
"Not going? Oh, what a shame... But, of course, there will be other times, and--"
"Yes, goodnight."
[Name] made her way towards her room as quickly as she could, still fighting the tears threatening to stream down her face.
"What's a royal ball to me, anyway?" she asked herself, voice cracking as she climbed up the stairs. She let out another choked sob before opening the door to her room.
