"I've been away so long. What if he's forgotten all about me?"
—————
Back in Sherwood Forest, the two brothers were lounging about in their hideout. Gilbert sat atop a log with his head leaning against his hand. Ludwig was tidying up what little laundry they had.
"Hey, Gil!" Ludwig called out.
But ol' Robin Hood didn't hear him. He was too busy daydreaming, humming a sweet tune to himself.
"Gil? Gilbert?" Ludwig looked over at his brother and rolled his eyes.
Gilbert stopped humming and peered over at his brother quizzically. "Hm? What'cha say?"
Ludwig waved his brother off. "Forget it, you're too busy zhinking about somebody with long eyelashes, and you're smellin' zhat sweet perfume."
Gilbert feigned exaggerated offense, but he quickly dropped the act when he saw his brother's annoyed expression. Gilbert laughed nervously, but his shoulders drooped and his face softened.
"'m sorry, Lud," Gilbert said, "I was zhinking about Maid [Name]... I can't help it! I love her, Ludwig."
"Zhen why don't you stop moping around and do somezhing about it? Just marry her," his brother retorted, throwing some of the dry laundry at Gilbert's face.
Gilbert pulled the laundry off of his head and sighed. "Marry her? You don't just walk up to a girl, hand her a bouquet and say, 'hey, remember me? we were kids together, will you marry me?'"
Gilbert made a show of himself, pretending to hand Ludwig a bouquet and feigned bravado. The act quickly dropped, and he slumped back down onto his log with a solemn expression.
"Besides, what have I got to offer her? She's a highborn lady!"
"So, she's got class? What of it?"
"I'm an outlaw, zhat's what," Gilbert replied sternly, "zhat's no life for a lovely lady. Always on zhe run. What kind of a future is that?"
"Oh, for heaven's sake, son!" an elderly, but soft voice cried out, spooking Gilbert out of his wood seat. It was only when he saw it was only the old Friar Tuck had come upon their merry little outpost that Gilbert calmed down.
"Yer no outlaw," Friar Tuck threw his arms out, "why someday, you'll be called a great hero."
Gilbert and Ludwig paused before letting out a chuckle. "Ya hear zhat, Lud? We've just been pardoned!"
"And we haven't even been arrested yet," Ludwig replied.
Friar Tuck rolled his eyes and sat beside Gilbert, who had also taken his seat once again on the log.
"You two rogues laugh all you want, but there's going to be a big to-do in Nottingham," Friar Tuck said, slapping his hands on his knees, "Prince John's havin' a championship archery competition tomorrow."
This piqued Gilbert's interest. It was no secret Prince John wanted his head, but this championship was a blatant display. Ol' John wanted to catch the notorious Robin Hood as if he'd just stroll up to an event swarming with guards! What a laugh, because Robin Hood certainly wouldn't walk into such a blatant trap for anything.
At least that's what Gilbert told himself.
"I'm sure we're not invited, anyway," Gilbert pointed out.
Friar Tuck shook his head. "No, but there's somebody who'll be very disappointed if you don't show up."
Gilbert's eyebrows raised, "who?"
