your pov:

today was my boyfriends birthday. right now, he was in the studio, so i had a few hours to put his surprise party together.

slim and rook were working on decorating and i had decided i was going to make a cake myself.

pete was babysitting casie right now, we wanted her to help set up the party but bless her little heart, we knew she would get too excited and tell her father.

i could hear the boys in the living room. they were supposed to be blowing up balloons but i heard their squeaking voices, pitched up from helium.

i gave a small chuckle as i whisked the dry and wet ingredients together. i opened my phone and looked at the recipe i had googled. 2 cups of boiled water. i put the kettle on the stove with the measured amount of liquid and let it heat up.

i poured it straight into the batter, folding it in carefully and watching it thin out. it felt... too thin, though. was two cups right?

checking my phone again, i gasped quietly. 1 cup of boiling water. i had looked at the wrong ingredient and therefore added the wrong amount.

i quickly dialed up my mother, she would know what to do.

"hello (y/n) dear, what's up?"

"hey ma, i think i messed up the cake for colsons birthday... if i added a cup too much of water, would the cake be fine?"

"oh i'm sorry (y/n), probably not. i think the best thing you can do is either double up on everything else or restart love"

"oh, uhhh, alright, thanks mom, i love you"

"love you too"

i shoved my phone back in my pocket and sighed. i knew i didn't have enough to double everything or start from scratch and if i ran to the store, well, i wouldn't have enough time to bake.

i sighed and poured the overly thin batter into the pans and shoved them in the oven, starting on the icing.

and, like everything could go wrong, it did. the icing started melting as soon as i messily piped it onto the cake, which apparently was too hot. it dripped down the sides and i tried to salvage it by dying the rest red and piping happy birthday. i stared at the mess and sighed.

"slim, rook?" i called out, making my way to the area they were supposed to be decorating.

"what's up, (y/n)?" they asked.

the room looked amazing, at least one thing turned out right.

"could y'all go to whole foods or some shit and pick up a cake? the one i baked is fucked up. i can finish up here"

"yeah of course" they agreed before running out the front door.

i then tried to brush the powered sugar off my shirt, going to wash the dishes.

colsons pov:

"travis, c'mon dude, we've been at it for hours, it sounds fine. can't we finish it tomorrow?"

"kells, please just, just finish up this last part, then you can go" travis sighed.

"you said that hours ago" i groaned, but got up to re-record it (for the 50th time at least) anyway.

it wasn't travis's fault i was upset really. it was just that everyone had forgotten today was my birthday. except (y/n). my heart swelled just thinking about her. we were in the middle of a breakfast in bed she had made me when i got the call to come in.
