I'm publishing this a week earlier than I had originally planned because I feel like it has been one of those weeks and we all just need to escape for a bit. Please enjoy!

5 YEARS LATER -- TAKES PLACE DURING CATWS

"You've done well," Pierce smiled, clapping you on the back.

You wouldn't necessarily call him a father figure, but he was close. He protected you from the outside world, taught you everything you needed to know, and trained you in weaponry. What else more could a family member do for you? Sometimes his methods were quite harsh, but you were constantly reminded that it was the discipline that made you stronger.

You had to agree. Looking back on the younger you, all you saw was weakness.

"In fact, you've done so well," Pierce continued, "that I and the rest of HYDRA believe that you're ready for a larger mission."

You nodded, doing your best to express no emotion. Displays of emotion could show weakness, something HYDRA wasn't overly fond of.

"Who will I be going with?"

You were usually a backup or an assisting agent on larger missions. Just last week, you assisted the Winter Soldier in an assassination. Just having the job with the Winter Soldier himself was a huge honor. You loved your job -- you were ensuring peace.

"You'll be going solo."

You cocked your head to the side. "What kind of mission is this?"

You almost winced at your mistake of asking an unnecessary question. Thankfully, Pierce let it slide.

"A mission you're ready for. (Y/N), you've passed every one of our tests with flying colors. Athleticism, knowledge, interrogation skills, etc., you've done it. You've been harshly trained and disciplined, and never once have you cracked under pressure."

"Thank you, Mr. Pierce."

"We're also ready to give you the serum."

You're eyes widened. Receiving the serum meant your training was complete. You would be able to become a HYDRA agent.

The serum had its consequences because it was like a treaty. HYDRA created that serum, and by taking it, you were pledging your allegiance to them. You'd be sterilized in the process, and taking the serum could never be reversed. It was also a painful process that some didn't make it through. However, the serum increased your alertness, senses, and strength.

You followed Pierce down the hallway and into the lab. In the room right next to you, you could see the Winter Soldier staring blankly through the cell. Wiping of memories only happened if it needed to be done. You never had it done, as your past never got in the way of things. That was the benefit of being a volunteer. There was no life you desired to go back to. You didn't know where the Winter Soldier was from or how long he had been in the facility, but he was clearly fighting something. Big mistake. From day one, you learned that surrendering to HYDRA was the number one option. You fought whomever they opposed.

A doctor shoved you into a seat and prepared a vial with a blueish liquid. You stared at the needle, realizing this would be the last challenge you would have to face to become an agent. Pierce watched you like a hawk through the glass of the lab.

Without warning, the needle penetrated your skin. You seethed as the liquid slowly got pushed into your veins. Your entire body wanted to resist and spit out the serum, regardless of what you wanted it to do. You bit your lip as your entire body contracted.
