The big day had finally arrived for the Thornton family. It was the day that they would bury their beloved Jack, Josefina's son, Briar Rose's husband, and Jessica, Eric, Misty, Elizabeth Lillian, Peter, Amanda, Topanga, and Jack Jr.'s father.
The plan was to have the wake indoors and part of the service there, then they would move to the cemetery where the funeral would be concluded.
David was with his nieces and nephews in the living room dressed in his marine blues holding little baby Jack Thomas Thornton jr. Jack jr looked adorable for such a sad occasion, he was wearing black dress pants and shoes, a black dress shirt and a little gray tie and vest. Peter and Eric were wearing the same thing as JJ the twins were wearing matching black dresses, they were solid black at the top but the skirt part was a bit poofy (it was also solid black) Jessica and Lyndy were also wearing black while Elizabeth Lillian wore what she was required to wear, her marine blues.
David was trying to console JJ who was growing a bit fussy, they all waited patiently for Briar Rose to come down the stairs so they could go to the funeral home. He looked at Elizabeth who was standing waiting, he looked back at JJ and then back at Elizabeth, "can I straighten you up?" He asked, noticing one of the buttons weren't fully in place.
"Mmm hmm" Elizabeth said nodding, he walked over and fixed her button and made sure that her medals were in tip top shape.
"There we go." Then the unbearable silence returned, "I should go check on Briar." He said handing the baby off to Jessica. He went towards the stairs and Briar Rose came out in her marine blues.
"I'm ready." She said bleakly. Elizabeth placed a hand on her mother's shoulder and smiled, while Briar Rose locked arms with her younger brother.
Swellview Funeral home... They approached the doors of the room and Elizabeth stopped her siblings but allowed Briar Rose, Josefina, and David to get in. "Let Mama and Abuelita have a moment."
When Briar Rose approached the casket, she looked and saw the first man she ever loved, the man that she had been in a relationship with since she was seventeen, the man that she bore and lost children with. They were two years away from twenty years of marriage.
She dropped to her knees, put her hands on the side of the casket and began wailing, over the loss of her beloved Jack.
Josefina joined her on the floor and mourned over the loss of her second and last child. She was only pregnant one time, and she conceived fraternal twins, both boys, Joseph and Jack. They both died in the opposite order they were born. Jack was born first and Joseph was born second. Joseph died first and Jack died second.
Then a deep, booming, southern voice sounded throughout the foyer, "well it's about time I meet my new grandson!" The man was tall, even though he had a bit of a belly to him he still looked very tough, he wore a black tux and marine hat on his head, he had white hair and beard. He walked over towards Jessie and took that baby out of her arms. "Wow, you look an awful lot like you Daddy don't you?" The baby bobbed his head up and down and he laughed. "Too bad your Daddy went to live somewhere else."
"Well life isn't up to us, if it was this wouldn't be Dad's Funeral." Said Jessie.
"Yeah, and if it were up to me, when I see Elizabeth's boyfriend I'd be kicking his ass so far down the road that he'd be crapping in Missouri." He said, his gaze still on his new grandchild.
Elizabeth shook her head and rolled her eyes in, "Papi Joe!" She whined.
"Any thoughts on your son-in-law's funeral Captain Fryer?" Asked Jessie
"Well you know, as marines we are trained not to show emotion at times like this, they say it upsets the public."
"But you're not with the marines anymore."
