Davey was preparing for a big test. He didn't want to disappoint his family, so he was working as hard as possible to get a good grade. He already felt bad enough for being gay while it was technically illegal. He felt like he was committing a felony just by existing. His parents would be upset if they knew. They would throw him out of the house, or worse.
Davey sat in the library trying to cram the information into his head. No matter what he did, it wouldn't stick. How could this be happening? I'm supposed to be the smart one. He sat there pondering everything. He thought about all the people who've hurt him. How no one was ever different. Why would his new friends stick around?
"Hey, Dave?" a familiar voice said.
He jumped and turned around. "Oh, hey Jackie. Sorry, you startled me."
He chuckled. "That's what I was counting on. The look on your face is priceless."
"Is that a good thing?"
"Of course it is." Jack leaned against the chair next to Davey playfully. "Watcha doin?"
Davey sighed. "Studying for a test I'll never pass because I'm an idiot."
Jack sat next to him. "You's not an idiot, Dave. Far from it, actually."
"My dad doesn't seem to think so," Davey mumbled.
"Who cares what your dad thinks? You'll be old enough to move out in a few months," he leaned closer. "And I think you's the smartest guy there is."
Davey's cheeks turned pink. "Really?"
"Yeah. Davey, we launched a strike together. I would've been nothin' without you."
"Thanks, Jack."
Davey looked back at his papers. He read through it slowly, but still nothing. He was so focused on the paper, he didn't notice Jack stood up and leaned in next to him.
Jack kissed Davey's cheek. "You got this."
Davey froze. His heart was racing. He's never felt like this before.
"Sorry," Jack said. "I guess that was too soon. I don't even know if you's feel the same-"
Davey gently ran his hand along Jack's cheekbone and kissed him. Jack happily kissed back. After a moment, Davey pulled away and bit his lip.
"We shouldn't be doing this. It's illegal."
"Oh come on. What harm does loving someone do?"
Davey sighed. "I don't know. My whole life I felt like I was doing something wrong. I don't understand. Every other boy likes girls, why don't I?"
"Don't know. Honestly, I don't care whether the person I'm datin' is a girl, boy, or neither. I just want someone I love, who loves me back."
"Jack, I really need to study," Davey said, trying to brush off his feelings.
"Ok, ok. I hear ya."
Jack sat back down and watched Davey study for a few minutes. Davey looked up from his paper and smiled at him. Jack sure looked cute from that angle. He looked cute at any angle. Davey smiled and tried to go back to work.
"Hey Jack?"
"Yeah?"
Davey blushed. "Can we kiss again?"
Jack pulled his chair closer to Daveys. "Hell yes."
After a moment, Davey pulled away and giggled. "No matter what I do my fathers going to be disappointed in me. Might as well make this moment last."
Jack shot him a concerned look. "Dave, please be easy on yourself. Jugglin' school and work can't be good for you."
Davey sighed. "What can I do?"
"You could move into my penthouse with me? I know it's sudden, but even if we's not...you know...we's friends. No more stress over school. We'll work together. With our money combined it won't be much, but we can be happy."
"Happiness sounds nice," Davey reached for Jack's hand. "And we're more than friends...i-if that's ok with you."
Jack smiled. "Davey, will you be my boyfriend?"
"Yes!"
Davey leaned in and kissed him one more time.
