It has been a few months since the strike. Jack and Katherine broke up since they had almost nothing in common. Like a good friend, Davey was there to comfort Jack through all of it. As time went on, Jack realized he never loved Katherine. Not in that way. He thought she was pretty, but it wasn't anything more than that.
Davey couldn't help but notice a feeling he had around Jack he didn't feel around anyone else. His palms were sweaty, he stumbled on his words, and he had butterflies in his stomach. He never had feelings for girls like his parents wanted. Sure, girls made good friends, but nothing more. There was just something about Jack that was different.
Davey saw Crutchie in line to sell papes, but Jack was nowhere to be seen. Davey approached Crutchie.
"Is Jack coming?"
"Not today. He had something to take care of," Crutchie replied.
"What is it?" I asked.
"I can't say, but its important," Crutchie said.
What could he possibly be doing?
Jack was on his rooftop, wondering what it could've been if he never dated Katherine. He thought over his life and realized he always loved Davey from the moment they met. Katherine was just a distraction. If loving him is illegal, then why is this feeling so strong? He probably doesn't love me back. He's too good for me. He's practically perfect. I just wish I'd known sooner.
Jack pulled his hat over his head and laid down on the hard ground. He couldn't stop the pain, but he knew if something did happen with him and Davey, Davey could get hurt or sent to the refuge. The thought of Davey getting hurt killed him inside.
Jack heard a noise from the bottom of the latter. Someone was climbing it. Davey pulled himself up.
"Hey, Jack. Is everything ok? I've never seen you miss a day of work."
Jack couldn't believe his eyes. "Yeah...I just had to- had to..."
"Jack, please don't lie to me."
Jack sighed. "This was never about Katherine. The truth is I committed a crime."
Davey gasped. "What did you do?"
Jack fell silent.
"Jackie?" Davey panicked.
"I'm in love with you, Davey," Jack muttered, just loud enough for Davey to hear. "I guess I felt like there was somethin' between us, then I remembered that we's both boys. The world doesn't accept a relationship like this. We don't get a fairy tale romance. I'm sure you don't like me back in that way. I guess I was just thinkin' over how things could've been, Maybe if I never dated Katherine- Who am I kidding even if I didn't date her you're still too good for me."
"Hey Jack, I committed a crime too," Davey grinned at him.
"Wait, what?" after a moment Jack got the hint and smiled. "Really?"
Davey nodded. "I was too scared to say anything because I thought you were straight, and I thought I was the only one.
Jack wrapped his arms around Davey's neck. "I just don't want anythin' bad to happen to you. They could arrest us for this."
Davey melted into Jack's chest and tangled him in a hug. "No one needs to know. We shouldn't let the world stop us from being who we are, and loving eachother."
"You know, you're right. As always."
Jack ran his fingers through Davey's hair and kissed the top of his head. Jack held Davey tight, almost squeezing him.
"Hey, Davey?"
"Yes?"
Jack smiled. "You have no idea how long I've wanted to hold you like this."
Davey sank into Jack's chest. "Me too."
Jack kept ruffling and playing with Davey's hair. He kissed Davey's forehead. Davey grinned at him, then slowly drifted asleep. Once Davey was asleep, Jack looked at his sleeping beauty in awe. "Maybe we do get our own fairy tale romance. We can sneak around Whoever said lovin' someone was hurtin' anyone? I love you, my Davey."
