Hinata awoke to a ringing in his ears. His whole body ached in pain. Groaning, he tried to sit up but found that he couldn't, so he settled for opening his eyes. "You're awake. Thank goodness," Sugawara stated, pulling the ginger into a hug.
"Suga-Senpai..." Hinata was confused for a good minute more before everything came rushing back to him.
Hinata raced home in the pitch black, accelerating up the hill at an alarming speed. As he went to wipe his tears, his skate turned and hit his other one just as he reached the top, and he tumbled all the way down.
He didn't bother trying to stop it. He deserved it for letting them take Natsu away. He couldn't carry her or hold her anymore anyway, so his body was utterly useless. Eventually, he pulled himself off of the now bloodied road and went home.
His mind was in a haze as he started the oven for dinner. Natsu wouldn't like it if he didn't eat. Once he finished the katsu don, he placed a bowl down for himself, and one for his little sister out of habit.
It dawned on him as soon as he sat down. The overwhelming silence gnawed at his mind until he blacked out. Whether it was from rage, sadness, pain, or all of it, all he knew was that nothing in this house mattered if Natsu wasn't there to give it meaning.
By the time he punched the mirror, he stopped, falling to the floor, the kitchen now in complete disarray. His fever forced him to stop, or he would've continued his rampage until the whole house was in a million pieces. Tears. He's been crying since he and Natsu separated.
-----
It must've been hours until he woke up because the sun was now shining through the windows. Sighing, he crawled up the many steps of his home and to his room, reaching for the handle of the door and opening it.
Once he had achieved getting his phone from his bed, he leaned against the wall and dialed Yamara's number.
She never picked up.
He tried again.
No answer.
Again.
"Shouyou, if you're calling to check in on your sister, then she's fine. I told you to take some time off for yourself. If you can do that and prove to me that you've begun to change a little, I'll let you talk to her," an irritated Yamara said over the phone.
"If you're calling to tell me to put her back in your custody, I'm sure you already know I can't do that. Your mom's supposed to come home in a week or so to check in on you. Please, Shouyou, don't make this harder than it has to be. It's for your own good."
A minute had passed before Hinata finally spoke. Yamara put the phone back to her ear.
"I hate you. I thought you were there for me, but you're just as bad as Mom. I hate you both. I hate everyone except Natsu. The least you could do is tell me how she's actually feeling."
His voice was rough, dead, almost. Yamara had never heard his voice so sad, so broken.
"...She's opening up a little, but I can't get her to leave her room yet. She's eating, but she always says she'd rather have your food, and... she cries a lot. She wakes up crying sometimes, but I'm handling it. She fell asleep about an hour ago, so don't worry about it."
She hung up the phone before he could say anything else. Gripping his phone tightly, he threw it across the room, watching it shatter into God knows how many pieces.
"Why would you take her away like that?! We were happy! She was happy! Now you're making her sad! She can't sleep right, she's not happy! I hate that! I hate you! I hate Mom! I hate everything!"
His tears dripped onto his bloodied knees and ran down his leg, stinging his wounds. He ran as fast as he could out of his door, slamming it shut and opening Natsu's, closing that one much more softly.
The moment the doorknob clicked, he sank to the floor, laying where her bed used to be. It smelt like candy. Probably because she liked sweet things so much. His tear hit the floor, each 'plop' more agonizing than the last.
-----
When Sugawara saw Hinata's eyes darken, he teared up, holding him close once more. "Please, Hinata. Tell us what's wrong. Tell us what happened." The others had gone downstairs to clean up the kitchen and search the house for clues, but Sugawara stayed to monitor the ginger.
If anyone could talk the ginger down, it would be him.
His cold skin helped cool Hinata's much hotter, dirtied skin. "They took Natsu away..." His voice cracked, but he refused to cry anymore right now. "Nothing matters anymore." Those words echoed through the silver-haired male's head.
"Hinata, you want to know something?" He softly pulled away, cupping Hinata's cheeks with his hands. The ginger unconsciously leaned into them, his eyes closing.
"You're my whole world. Ever since I first saw you, I couldn't peel my eyes away. You shined as bright as the sun and you worked so hard for your sister and your teammates. When I found out how much you had been suffering, I felt terrible for not noticing it sooner. The whole team feels this way, whether they'll admit it or not. Even Tsukishima was worried about you."
His words made Hinata's eyes open wide, their signature glimmer returning, making Sugawara smile softly at him. Every word he said was true, Hinata had just been so caught up in his life with Natsu that he hadn't noticed.
"You did a wonderful job raising Natsu. You are an amazing brother, Hinata, but now you need to focus on yourself a bit. Natsu wouldn't like it if she saw you like this, right? Plus, I'm sure we can work out a way where you can see her on the weekends and stuff. We can figure it out as a team, okay?"
Never in his life, had he realized how much he wanted someone to tell him that he did a good job raising his little sister. That he was an amazing brother who tried his absolute best to make her life a living paradise. More tears.
These tears were different from the others, in a way. They soaked the mask he had spent his entire life building to the point that it ripped and fell to the floor. The other teammates walking in upon hearing Hinata's cries again but gapped at what they saw upon entering.
A large, real smile that outshined the sun was planted on his face. They could tell it was different from the ones he gave them at practice. Even with the tears streaming down his face, they could tell Suga had gotten through to him.
Cue the giant group hug.
