The news reporter had warned us about this, they've advised us to stay inside until further notice. But when I find myself at Sana's door, knocking and wanting for a response, only did I notice how dangerous it truly is to be out here.
Thunder rumbles and lightning strikes, flashes going off every thirty seconds or so. I came as fast as I could, knowing Sana's fear and how her ex treated her during these awful moments. She's helpless during storms and I can't help but feel like I need to be here for her, all so she can feel safe, even for just a short period of time.
In a panic, my hand dives into the bag I brought with me, gripping onto the spare metallic key she gave me. I insert the key and practically shove the front door open before closing it and scurrying around in hopes of finding the squirrel.
I check the living room, the kitchen, the bathrooms, the bedrooms but nothing. I call out her name a few times but to my avail I get nothing in return.
She's here, I know she is. Her car is here, her keys are here but I can't find her anywhere.
At least not until I catch a faint whimper coming from her closest. In one swift movement, I open the two closest doors, her fragile figure greets me.
She's curled up in a compact ball, her head in her knees and her hands are gripping onto one of the plushies I gave her as she cries.
"Sana" her head retreats from her knees, now looking up at me with her eyes extremely red and puffy, even in this terrible lighting I could see the panic o n her face.
I crouch down, eventually getting to my knees as I pull her close, wanting to comfort her. Her figure shakes in my arms, her tears run along my clothes as she nuzzles her head deep into my neck.
"It's going to be okay sana, please calm down" I rub small circles on her back as more thunder viciously rumbles outside. Lightning strikes again causing her to flinch and hug me tighter, pushing more weight onto me so I eventually fall over and hit the carpeted floor.
