PROLOGUE

Three months ago, I had a dream. And there was someone in that dream.

A stranger.

And ever since then, he's visited me every night in my sleep.

  ***

(Dream)

My friend, I can't recall who it was, was talking to me as we roller-skated over to the Ferris wheel, cotton candy in hand. Silly how when we got there, there was no line, no employee, and our roller skates magically disappeared.

Dreams are funny like that.

Being the only two there, we chose which gondola we wanted to ride in and we ascended slowly into the night sky.

"Isn't it beautiful?" I asked my anonymous friend, looking over the brightly lit city.

She mumbled an agreement as I admired the twinkling lights below.

I looked down at the ground, spotting someone staring up at me.

It was him.

I shouldn't have been surprised. He always did this.

Our eyes locked for the small moment before the Ferris wheel abruptly halted.

When I turned my attention back to the spot where he once was, my surroundings changed, shifting and reappearing. I was now standing in the deserted amusement park, alone. Everything was dark, no colorful lights or familiar sounds.

Just me.

He was gone.

"Mom, I swear I saw him.," I whined, collapsing onto her bed.

My mom just continued to fold the laundry, trying her best not to laugh. I buried my face into the comforter.

I moaned, fiddling with string that hung from the hem of the comforter.

Finally, mom stopped what she was doing and looked at me. "What does he look like?"

I was caught a little off guard by her curiosity. After about the 100th time that I told her some strange guy was always in my dreams, she started to become less and less amused by it.

"Well, it's kind of weird, actually. I've never seen him up close, but I know what he looks like."I drifted off into La La Land thinking about him.

My mom cleared her throat.

"Oh! Well, he has these gorgeous green eyes and dark, chocolately brown hair that's a little messy, but a stylish kind of messy, ya know?" I bit my lip, trying to down my excitement.

"I really don't know what you girls are into these days," she giggled. "But he sounds cute."

"And he always wears the same thing..." I drawled. "A plain black hoodie, worn-out faded jeans, and converse." I played with my ring. "You know, he never talks to me, though. He just has this know-it-all smirk on his face, too. It's kind of obnoxious." I laughed, shaking my head.

"Hm." My mom disappeared into the bathroom with an arm-full of clean towels, then returned with abasket full of dirty ones.

"Maybe it’s nothing.” I sighed, sitting up and stretching. "Thanks for listening, though.”

I stared out the window, watching the snow dance around.

"Sweetie?" she asked.

"Yeah?”

Her lips tugged up in a small smile. "You never know, maybe it's something."

I watched as a snow flake happily twirled around until it landed on the window and melted.

I smiled. "Maybe."

I hoped so.
