The plane was completely empty, the varying shades of green grass stretching as far as the eye could see in all directions. I sat in the midst of it all, in a small clearing surrounded by the thick grass, my eyes set on a small, red, lily in front of me. It was quiet, the only sound coming from the wind whispering as it cut and moved through the grass.

Distant cawing echoed in my ears, my eyes barely moving from the lily to examine the grey sky. Black dots were circling in the distance, drawing closer and closer with each beat of my heart until they were over head and circling around me. My eyes shifted from the lily to the ravens in the sky, watching them. They seemed to make eye contact every now and then, almost stopping midair and looking directly at me. I thought nothing of it.

The five of them seemed happy, dipping close to the ground and raising back up to where the other four were, chasing each other with beats of their wings. I smiled as I watched it, their different personalities clear in the way they played together. One landed right in front of me, shuffling on its feet to look at me. It has a brilliant shade of blue somewhere in its eyes, a blue that reminded me desperate of someone, someone I couldn't place.

It flew off to join the others, my eyes following it. There was only four of them up there, now. I looked all around for it, turning my head from right to left. I couldn't move my arms, my legs. I was stuck there.

I watched the others, still searching the sky and the grass around me every now and then, hoping to catch a glimpse of the raven that disappeared. I tried to keep it out of my mind as I watched the others. Two of them seemed closer knit than the others, circling each other in tight patterns, dipping and rising back into the sky at the same time as the other, fighting with each other at times only to play not moments later.

I looked back down at the lily, watching its petals as they drifted in the wind. I looked up, only to catch what looked like chips of paint drifting through the air before disappearing little by little until there was nothing left. Another raven was gone.

The others were calmer now, their moves less cheerful and fun than they were, no longer chasing each other around, just drifting lazzily through the air, cawing at each other every now and then. The silence was horrible, watching them as they slowly seemed to lose their energy they previously had. I felt horrible, watching them like that. It hurt to watch them lose that cheer they had.

Another disappeared with me looking directly at it, dissapating into little chips of paint in the air as it drifted in the wind, leaving a trail behind it until it was completely gone. The two, closely knit, ones were left alone, flying closer and closer to the ground around me, their caws sounding sick and horrible, a touch of sadness present in their beady little eyes.

I wanted to reach out to one. I don't know why I had that urge, but I wanted to. I wanted to draw them to me. It was horrible watching one of them disappear into the air, slowly turning to black dust and scattered in the wind. "Why?" I wanted to ask to no one. Despite it all, not being truly attached to the birds, it hurt. It hurt more than anything, other than back in... "No..." I managed to say, silent tears sliding down my cheek.

The last one gave up flying in the air with no one else around it, fluttering down onto the grass in front of me, just beyond the red lily. It cawed weakly, sadly at me, its eyes locked on my own.

It was crushed by a larger, sinister looking bird, wisps of black smoke swirling around the bird - the vulture - and disappearing into the air until nothing was left besides me, the vulture, and the lily. The vulture seemed to smile at me, a cold, calculating smile that sent chills up and down my spine.

The lily slowly drained of its colour, wilting. And a shot echoed in my ears.
