Loreli POV

I opened my eyes, waiting for the morning light to seep in and for the old smell of the trees to fill my nose. Instead, I woke up to complete darkness.

I looked around and noticed everywhere I looked was just black. I could see perfectly fine, it was like someone painted a room pitch black and stuck me in it.

Suddenly, my legs gave out from under me and I felt my stomach quese. I was falling quickly, but my surrounding didn't seem to change from the pitch black. My hair flew up as the wind whistled in my ear.

Where is that wind even coming from, I thought as I looked down.

My legs were almost floating in the air, but I could feel the drop slightly lifting them.

I opened my mouth to yell but the air in my lungs was almost sucked out of me, leaving my mouth agape like a fish out of water.

I was finally able to let out a word, something that just suddenly formed in my mind.

¨ Stop!¨

And it did.

I felt my feet touch the earth again as the surroundings changed. The pitch-black turned into a comfortable-looking room.

A bed with white sheets and a silver backboard sat in the middle of the room, my body facing it. There was a window that seemed to lead to a bright white light to my left, and a closed-door to my right.

Examining the room, I realized I wasn't alone.

Sitting up in the bed was a girl, someone who looked similar to me.

¨hello?¨ I reached out, expecting the girl to ask who I was and what I was doing.

But, she didn't even react to me, only staring at me like someone would an experiment.

As I got closer I saw her eyes follow me, seeming to mentally jot down all my movements.

¨ hello Loreli.¨

Her voice was thick with a British accent and was sweet like honey.

My eyes indeed as I realized I never even said my name, nor do I know her.

¨ who are you? What do you want from me?!¨ My voice came out panicked, which made sense seeing as the last random person I saw took my sister.

¨ who I am is not important. It's who you are, and what you've done to my world that concerns me.¨ The girl got off of the bed, walking towards me as her white dress dragged slightly behind her.

As she got closer, I realized she had wings. Bright white wings.

They seemed to hide in her dress, blending in almost perfectly.

¨ what do you mean by what I've done?¨ My mouth formed the words before I could even think of what she said.

¨ well, for starters you weren't even supposed to survive the attack. You were supposed to be a dead body Alexia found. You weren't supposed to live.¨ Her sweet voice brought chills to my spine as I realized what she meant.

I was supposed to die at the hands of the shadow figure.

¨ and yet, here you are. Traveling with my champion to find your sister. It's almost sad that my champion took pity on you.¨ she circled me, my mind kicking into fight or flight mode, but ultimately staying still.

¨ and who is this champion?¨ I asked, wanting to know what she meant.

¨ why, of course, it's Alexia.¨ she answered like it was the simplest thing in the world. She rounded back around in front of me, her wings now spread out.

¨ how do you decide if I live or not?¨ My body trembled, realizing my sudden comment may mean I would die.

She seemed to look over me once more, specifically eyeing my birthmark that I usually kept hidden on my neck.

¨ interesting. You are different from other humans who have joined my older champions. Maybe you can prove me wrong?¨

Her voice had a hint of menace near the end, but all I could focus on was the fact I got to live.

¨ don't disappoint me, child of Protogonus¨

And I dropped yet again into the darkness.
