Day 43, Sunday Waxing Crescent Pt.3
After explaining what had happened between himself and Serena, Grayson asked Hunter for his opinion.
"I know you said before that no one's been bitten in a hundred years." Grayson looked Hunter in the eye. "But doesn't that mean it's still possible?"
Hunter stared back at him. "It's gotta be. I mean, until last night, I didn't even know I could shift without a moon. Anything is possible at this point." He paused. "I thought I knew the weirdest secret out there, but it turns out I don't even know myself." Hunter looked at the ceiling. "If I'm being honest, that scares me a little. I don't know if it's safe for you to be here right now."
Grayson rolled his eyes. "I think the drugs will take you out way before that happens. Besides," He stretched. "I already promised to keep coming back."
Day 42, Saturday Waxing Crescent pt. 3
After being kicked out of Serena's room, Grayson found himself sitting on the cold hard floor in the hallway.
Whatever they had used to silence Serena had surely knocked her out cold, as no sound could be heard from inside the room. Evangeline had disappeared without a word, leaving him with his thoughts.
What was he supposed to do now? He glanced down the hall, towards the other patient room.
Hunter had been in surgery longer than Serena, and the last time he saw him, he was being bundled up and put in the back of a van. Just recalling that made Grayson realize how upset he actually was. They were both injured now, and for what?
Grayson wondered if, on some level, he was somehow responsible for everything that had happened.
Eventually, he heard the distant click of a door opening--Hunter's door. He looked up.
There was a woman with short hair in mahogany curls. Her small frame bundled into a sweater, sweatpants, muddy boots, and a hastily applied trenchcoat. Her dark brown eyes widened with concern as she rubbed her hands together in the same motion Grayson had seen Hunter do at least a dozen times.
"Are you alright?" She asked.
Grayson stood quickly, dusting off his pants. "Yes, I..Uh..." He rubbed the back of his neck as she approached. "You must be Hunter's Mother. I'm--"
Her eyes sparkled with realization. "Grayson." She took his hand shaking it with more strength than he expected. "Yes, Lena Reeds. Glad we could finally meet!"
He blinked. "How did you know I was--"
"Hunter told me all about you." She cut him off, releasing his hand.
"He did?" Grayson responded in surprise.
"My baby isn't good at keeping anything secret. Except, well, you know..."She adjusted her coat. "Did you see him? He's going to fall asleep any second, so now's the time."
"Well, if he's tired I can just--"
"Please, go see him." She patted his arm. "He'll be so happy, and there's no telling when he'll be up again."
"Okay." Grayson found he couldn't refuse.
Lena checked her wristwatch. "Abe should be back soon. He promised to drive me back into town. Do you want him to drop you at the school?"
Grayson nodded. "I'd appreciate that, thanks."
Lena smiled and leaned against the wall. "Hurry now, before he falls asleep."
