Day 72. Sunday, Waxing Crescent (Part Two)

With only a few hours of prep time, Grayson gathered what he thought would be necessary and headed back out onto the darkening campus.

Or at least, he tried to.

"Now where do you think you're going, mister?"

A short blur of brown and plaid slipped in front of Grayson just as he reached the front door.

Grayson looked down to find a woman with an abundance of brown curls tucked into a checked handkerchief, dressed in all plaid with the exception of her hot pink slippers. She was older than the average Redwood student, so he assumed she was some sort of staff member.

"Just going out, Mrs.–"

"Miss. Beas-ly." Her tone was jubilant, and her red-painted lips spread for a face-stretching smile. "Your new dorm mother!"

"Dorm mother?" Grayson repeated. While living at Marconi came with amenities, and floor leaders were posted on the boards downstairs, any type of authority had been scarce up to this point.

"As you know, our little house recently lost one of its own–"

Grayson was incensed. "Serena isn't dead."

"--and parents are very concerned. I'm here to make sure everyone is being safe and staying out of trouble!" She continued on as if he had never interrupted her. "And that means making sure you're all in before curfew!" She put a hand on his shoulder, her acrylic nails digging into the fabric. "I'm sure you of all people can understand that, Mr. Lee. We wouldn't want any more accidents, right?"

He wasn't sure if that was supposed to sound as threatening as it did. "I understand but..."

"Good!" She ushered him back towards the hall. "Now head back on upstairs now!"

He tried to go around her. "I just have to—"

"Scoot mister! Whatever it is can wait for daylight."

"But..."

"No buts!"

He found himself growing impatient. "Miss Beasley, please. There's something really important I have to do right now. It will only take a few minutes, and I'll be back before–"

The woman's face became tinged with pink. "Mr. Lee, are you sassing me?"

"No, Miss Beasley."

"Do I have to have a word with your parents?"

Grayson gritted his teeth and took a deep breath. This wasn't getting him anywhere. "No, Miss Beasley."

"Great!~" She beamed. "Now scoot!"

Grayson went back down the hall, stopping briefly to watch Miss Beasley block another dorm member for stepping out the door. He headed back upstairs, calculating his options.

He supposed he could try calling Hunter first. Maybe the early shift didn't pan out and he was fine?

No answer there. Not a good sign.

He paced his room for a moment before deciding to call Tom. All the while his roommate Arif tossed a handball at the wall.

"What're you doing?"

Grayson stopped in his tracks, suddenly aware of Arif's presence. "Oh. I just...My boyfriend is sick and I just wanted to check on him but..."

"That crazy chick is still blocking the door? Yeah. I saw her chewing some guy out for smoking by the porch. It sucks." He caught the ball as it bounced from his last throw and examined it. "So what are you gonna do?" Arif raised an eyebrow. "Sneak out?"
