Day 64. Saturday, Waning Crescent (Continued)
Tents. Hammocks. Safety packs. Hunter didn't know anything about any of it, but the outdoor emporium had plenty of it all. Walls were packed with survival gear, kayaks and inflatable rafts hung above, attached to stretched fishnets that covered the high ceilings. Multiple mounted deer heads watched as the four moved through the store.
From what Hunter observed, it seemed that outdoor sports were a common pastime. Hikers compared their new gear in one corner, while a father lectured his children on the importance of good hiking boots in another section.
As they moved towards the essentials, Notes and Ashley ran off in two different directions.
Seeing a chance to explore on his own, Hunter moved away.
His eye was immediately drawn to, of all things, a large assortment of camouflage goods. Vests, hoodies, mugs, backpacks, and more were covered in blotchy green print.
"Redneck couture. Love it." Squinting over his shades, Hunter saw something he couldn't believe. A bright green camo hat with a large orange patch. "It's so pointless. So tacky." He picked it up. "I must buy it immediately."
Pleased with his find, he continued on towards camp essentials, where he found Grayson standing at a wall covered in tools.
"Look, a tiny axe!" Grayson held the tool aloft.
"Adorable." Hunter nodded. "Perfect for the murderer on the go!"
"You think so?" Grayson looked down at the possible murder weapon. "Maybe I should start my life of crime then."
"Last I checked it had already started." Hunter reached out to take the axe away from him. "Let's not graduate from misdemeanors to murders."
"Alright..." Grayson shrugged, handing him the small axe. "Let's go pick out a tent then. I narrowed it down to three good ones, but I figured we should both look at them since we're going to be sleeping together."
Hunter raised an eyebrow.
Grayson blinked. "In...the tent."
Hunter was smug. "Go on."
Grayson rolled his eyes. "You know what I mean."
Hunter shrugged as Grayson began walking towards the tent displays. "No, I don't. Enlighten me."
They stood in front of a display with a fake campsite.
"I'm not..." Grayson's eyes went to the hat in Hunter's hand. "That's...a bold choice."
"Isn't it hideous?" Hunter's smile widened.
"Oh." Grayson relaxed slightly. "Well, as long as you're aware."
"It's fur-lined." Hunter spun the hat on his finger.
"It's an affront to good taste." Grayson crossed his arms. "You're going to wear it the whole weekend, aren't you?"
"Absolutely." Hunter looked away from him to focus on the many products included in the camping display. "The longer you look, the more stuff there is. Do we really need all of this to go camping for a few days?"
"No, we simplified the list after you fell asleep. Besides, it's only two nights..." Grayson dropped his arms to his sides and he glanced around before he asked his next question. "So...What happened back there in the van?"
Hunter's eyebrows raised in recollection. He tilted his sunglasses back to look Grayson in the eye. "You mean that thing with Ashley?" His mood instantly soured. "As I said, I don't want to stick out, okay?"
