"Come again?" Hunter blinked. "Repeat that for me?"
"Abe? Your Dad's partner?" Lena let go of her son's face.
The door clicked. Assuming it was Grayson, Hunter continued.
"I mean, I had a feeling but..." Hunter swallowed. "Seriously? You know he stalked me all semester, right? He literally arrested me in the middle of the night and dragged me off campus!"
"I had my reasons," Abner said, slipping into the room with a cardboard cup carrier and a large grease-stained paper bag.
"Oh great." Hunter crossed his arms."It's the man of the hour! Yes, please explain in front of my mom why you abducted me and made me think I was going to jail. Not a fun scenario for a black kid, let me tell you."
Abe glanced from Hunter to Lena. "Is he always this excitable?"
Hunter glowered at him. "You're so lucky I can't feel my legs right now."
Lena did not look amused.
Abner set down the cup carrier and bag. "Coffee, Lena?" He fished out a small creamer and two packets from the bag. "Cream and sugar, right?"
"Ew..." Hunter muttered and Lena took the item from him. "Why do you know how my Mom likes her coffee? Weirdo."
"My baby has a point, Abe." Lena didn't look up from her coffee. Why didn't you tell him who you were?"
"I didn't want the fellas up top to think I was playing favorites." Abe offered, sinking into a chair and pulling a foil-wrapped sandwich from the bag. "So I had to great you like the others."
"Oh yeah?" Hunter swallowed, trying not to drool over the sandwich Abner was unwrapping. "Did you follow everyone else around campus?"
"To an extent, yes." Abner replied. "But I couldn't build a case against any of them. I wasn't expecting to haul you in though...Until that girl got sloppy."
Down the hall, Grayson and the others were watching Serena with shock and interest.
Not only had she admitted to assaulting Ashley that night in the woods, she actually seemed pleased about it.
Day 25. Thursday, Full Moon (Continued)
Head clearing from the rapture of her own misdeeds, Serena decided to check her appearance. One ripped cardigan sleeve, dirt speckled tights, and a cheek speckled with blood.
She rubbed the icky substance from her face as she began trudging back up to campus.
There would be no ambulance for Ashley, she decided. She would let someone else find her.
There was a creeping nervousness spreading through her, telling her time was now limited. Balling her cardigan up and into her bag, she made her way back to the shuttle vans. With possible incarceration in her future, Serena decided it would be better to enjoy the weekend until she was sent, well, wherever murderous werewolf women went.
Upon returning to the festival, she walked the streets with new excitement. The colors seemed brighter, the faces around her all the more jubilant.
It wasn't long before she found the hotel. College students flooded in and out of the lobby, and her own curiosity brought her out onto the patio.
Serena stopped to watch a group of people dancing around a small fire. Music was blasting from a speaker system, students sat on logs. They tossed food items into the flame, cheering each time the fire jumped.
With a smirk, she dropped the ripped cardigan into the fire much to the delight of the drunk kids around her. They gasped and cheered, as if they were congratulating her. As if they knew.
They don't know, Serena thought as she ascended to the small hotel room she had rented for the weekend.
They won't know, she decided as she took a shower, washing away the dirt and musk of the forest.
As she sat on the bed and considered rejoining the festivities, there was a knock at the door.
