Charlotte and Sean walked down the marble tiled hallway towards the library. It wasn’t where they had met exactly but it was where they had spent the most time post-memory-loss and it was where they learned the most about each other. Now, it was their go-to spot. They were the only two people who ever used it, so it was like their own little sanctuary.
Sean sat down on a wide chaise near the back of the room, leaving space for Charlotte. She settled next to him, appreciating the smell of old books.
"I realized I never apologized for everything that happened after verification day." She mumbled into his shoulder.
"That's not something you need to apologize for, princess. You had no memories and even if you had, it was always your decision. You just took a little while to decide." He replied absentmindedly combing through her hair. "If anyone should be apologizing, it's me. I wanted to tell you everything sooner, I should have told you sooner. I just thought I had more time, and I never thought King Amir would wipe your memories."
"That's the thing though, all of my memories left, but you never did." She smiled into his shirt. "I lost my home when I moved into the castle and normally the castle would have become my new home but it never did. And amongst all of the chaos I felt like I had no home, but then I realized that home isn't always a place.” She traced the buttons on his shirt. “You were my home and I never lost you."
He was quiet for a while, lost in thought. Charlotte sat up so she could read his face. Maybe she had said something wrong. But before she could decipher what was going through his mind, his hands were in her hair. He paused centimeters away from her mouth, a silent question in the air between them. She grabbed his shirt in her fists pulling him toward her, closing the gap between them.
And in that moment she knew that she had fallen for him like gravity had let go of the earth.
