*The Kings POV*
The Kings emotions swam around his head like waves pounding at the shells on a beach, breaking them apart until they are nothing but sand. Why hadn't he sent more guards? Why hadn't he explained more in the letter? Why did he feel like he was always letting everyone down?
Sean should've arrived several hours ago, with Charlotte in tow. He was one of his best guards, he was never late, and the fact that he was, gave him more nerves than he'd probably ever had. He had already started to think of Charlotte as a daughter, and he didn't think he could handle the loss of another child. He knew that they had to have been attacked to make Sean late, Sean wasn't a sloppy person. The king knew that he needed to send a search team ASAP.
"Sir?" a small voice questioned nervously.
"Yes, Marcus?" the king replied with a twinge of annoyance.
"I-I-I just thought...that maybe...if you thought that..." Marcus started to mumble.
"Just spit it out." The king replied a little to harsh. He mentally flinched, despite what the servants surely thought of him, he wasn't a big mean strict king, at least he tried not to be. That's one thing he loved about Charlotte, she always saw the best in him, even when no one else saw it. He was called many things, some more than others, some harsher than others, but they were said none the less, and they tended to lean towards the harsh side.
Not many people saw him for who he really was and despite his efforts, it didn't look like that was going to change anytime soon. He tried to protect his people as best he could and so far he was doing pretty well, but no one stopped to think about that, they just spouted whatever they happened to be thinking about at the time.
"Well, sir, I was thinking about Sean, and I know that isn't part of my job, but I thought that you would probably want to send more guards to find them. So, I have prepared a skilled team to lead the search and gathered some other willing guards." Marcus said after a deep steeling breath.
"Should that be what you decide is best of course." he added quickly.
The king took a few minutes to think it over. On one hand finding Sean and Charlotte was his top priority, but on the other hand it was a lot of guards that would be leaving their positions of guarding the city surrounding the palace which meant that it would be slightly less safe than usual. If anyone in the surrounding city were to realize, it could cause a harrowing uproar.
"Yes, very well Marcus, Thank you." he said finally, placing his hand at the nape of his neck.
"R-really Sir!" he asked astounded that the king had agreed with him instead of scoffing at his stupidity.
"Yes, get them on their way as soon as possible, and remember to send them with food and plenty of weapons just in case. They are probably in the woods somewhere so have them start there, and fan out to cover all grounds."
"Yes sir," Marcus replied with a bow.
As soon as the guard had left and the large gold trimmed door had closed, the King slumped down in the gold platted throne sitting at the top of a set of stairs at the back of the large throne room, the pressure of the journey weighing down on him. He just hoped that the journey was fast and successful.
A sudden downpour of rain against one of the windows in the room caused him jump. He got up and walked over to the window before watching the path of the droplets of water. He let his mind wander to Sean, Charlotte, and the guards that were being sent to find them.
He knew that his decision could affect every citizen in his kingdom, but he couldn't ignore the tiny voice in the back of his head.
This small selfish part of him couldn't help but speak up. Reminding him that he almost rather it be Charlotte than him. Though he also knew that if the choice was presented to him he would take the dangerous uncertain venture she was surely living over the death of his citizens, of his kingdom.
That night, nightmares of death and misfortune plagued him and robbed him of sleep, as guards steadily searched through the forest making sure to carefully look for any signs of the soon to be crown princess.
