The phone rang causing Violet's head to hurt. It was too early for this shit. Violet sat up and wiped her eyes before walking to the phone and answering it.

"Violet!" the booming voice of Violet's boyfriend Leo shouts through the phone.

"Leo, are you alright?" Violet asked. "No! I was going to kill myself! I can't believe you abandoned me like this!" Leo shouted.

Violet began to cry. It was every day Violet would get a call from Leo. Demanding she see him or he'll kill himself. Violet was scared he'd actually do it. And would rush to his house and kiss him and hug him and comfort him. But it always ended badly. Because he'd end up hitting her or yelling at her. She'd feel worthless after spending time with him.

"I didn't mean to!" Violet protested. But it was useless. Because Leo always found her weak spot. "No wonder your father left you!" Leo said.

Violet's father, Milo. The man that up and left her when Violet was ten. Any mention of him and Violet would break down sobbing.

Most of that had to do with the fact that Violet's mother, Nancy, would say Milo left because of Violet. And it was Violet's fault. And Violet wasn't meant to be born.

It always hurt. But Violet never talked about it. She had no friends to talk to. Leo wouldn't let her have friends. He'd say he was the only one who loved Violet. And if Violet wanted to keep him. She wouldn't spend her time with anyone but him. Because he was "depressed." And he "needing her to help him through it."

Those were lies, of course, but Violet believed them. Leo was right. Wasn't he? She had to keep him. Didn't she?

Violet got dressed in a black hoodie, jeans, and converses before heading out the door. Nancy wasn't home. She was off whoring around with some man. Violet was used to it though. She would rather have Nancy gone to the man's house than the man at her house. She felt safer that way.

Violet walked out into the rainy morning. She looked at the neighboring house and saw a moving truck. A man yelling at three kids to get to work and a woman watching sometimes kissing on the man before returning to yell at her kids.

Violet thought nothing of it. Just parents telling kids what to do.

She headed off to Leo's house and knocked on the door. The black-headed boy answered. "Violet! You're late!" Leo scolded. "Sorry," Violet whispered and looked at her shoes. "Nevermind that! Get inside!" Leo said jerking Violet inside.

Leo kissed Violet's lips and pushed her against a wall. She let him. It was nothing. Just the normal stuff. As long as he wasn't yelling at her or hitting her, Violet figured it was alright. Maybe he did feel something for Violet after all. Maybe it could work. Maybe he wasn't so bad.

But no. It was all lies. Leo knew how to play with Violet. Leo knew how to keep her with him. But Violet didn't know.

This was normal.
