June 19, 1865 - When it All Began

Cold. Cold is working its way deep into my bones, unyielding. That's the first thing I notice as I regain consciousness. The next is that I can't breathe. I open my mouth but instead of air, water rushes in, choking me. My eyes fly open. I'm underwater, pinned down by something. Fear and panic overwhelm me. I begin thrashing my arms and legs, trying to free myself and get to the surface, but it's hopeless. My throat gets tighter, and my lungs are burning from the lack of oxygen. Exhaustion clouds over my senses, and I struggle to remain conscious.

"This is it," I think, "I'm going to die."

With that thought, everything becomes unfocused, and I slip away into darkness.
