After Stefan walks away, Bonnie and I resume walking to class. My mind is racing, my heart pounding. I become so lost in my thoughts I don't realize that I've stopped walking. Bonnie stops, looking back at me.

"Hey," she says, "Are you ok?"

"Yeah..." I reply, "just a headache."

Bonnie looks doubtful but can tell I don't want to get into it.

"Ok," she says, "Drink some water, that should help."

I look at her gratefully, "Thanks. We should start heading to class."

We continue walking but stop when we see Elena emerge from the boy's bathroom, and walks straight into Stefan.

They stare at each other for at least four seconds before he says something

They stare at each other for at least four seconds before he says something. I'm trying to hear what they're saying when Bonnie nudges me.

"I see chemistry" she singsongs.

I chuckle. "You think everyone has chemistry."

"Not true!" Bonnie says, swatting at my arm playfully causing me to laugh.

We watch as Elena walks past him, making her way to us looking flustered.

"Someone's got a crush." Bonnie whispers teasingly.

"Shut up," Elena mumbles.

"The first day back and you've already got the hottest guy drooling over you," Bonnie replies, "So not fair."

"I do not!" Elena whisper-shouts. "And you know I'm not looking to date anyone right now, it's too soon. So, can we go to class now? Please?"

"Ok, let's go," Bonnie answers, and we all start walking towards our first period.

I stay silent, trying to figure out how I'm supposed to deal with this. I don't hate Stefan, not at all. He may have killed me, which of course I'm upset about, but I'm not looking for revenge or anything. I just want to get on with my life. I've never been one to hold grudges, they're a waste of time.

"You good Amber?" Elena asks, eyebrows furrowed.

"Yeah, totally," I answer, "Just dreading Mr. Tanner's class."

"Omg same!" Bonnie exclaims, "He's such a hardass, I swear he's..."

She keeps talking, but I'm only half-listening.

I glance at Elena, who looks happier than she has all summer. It'll be fine, I think as we arrive at the history classroom, I just have to take it one day at a time...
