I shifted under the sleeping bag, trying to assume a comfortable position and get in the right mindset for the mini performance I must put on for my parents.  I could hear the steps creaking as they both walked up the old stairs. Every step they took made my heart race faster and faster, leaving me to sit in anticipation for them to reach the top of the stairs.

My mother stopped climbing the stairs and turned to my father," Are you sure we should tell her, David? it might mess her up...It's a lot of information to absorb. Maybe we should wait until tomorrow..."

"Honey, she's already a little messed up-but, aren't we all? It's going to be okay. It's not like she's in danger or anything. It's time, we have to do this. Now. " my Father said firmly.

It's driving me crazy. I'm not sure I want to hear what they are going to say. Mess me up?

They entered through the door at the top of the stairs and quietly bent down next to me. Mom started to shake my shoulders gently and spoke softly, " Honey!...Honey, there is something your father and I have to tell you. I sat up calmly and quietly, trying to prepare myself for the news I was about to receive. My mother's gentle hands lightly glided over my forearm, trying to make me more comfortable. My Father started to speak, " River, we need to talk about something serious. We have kept this from you for a while now, but we think you're ready to hear it."

" Did you get here pregnant?!" I exclaimed, "I don't think I could handle mom being pregnant, let alone have a newborn baby in the house that I would have to help take care of!!"

" No, no. Nothing like that." He said with a chuckle, "I have to tell you the truth."

I wasn't sure I wanted to hear the truth at that point.
