CLAIRE'S POV

Running hurts. Especially when you don't have any shoes on, and are in the process of wetting yourself from fright. The skeleton bones digging into my feet were painful, and made me cringe while stumbling. Who in their right mind saves a girl from getting raped, kidnaps them, sleeps in the same bed as them without them having the least bit of memory of what happened, let's them get kidnapped again, and let's them get persuaded by this old wizard guy that makes them believe that they're in a different dimension. Who? I mean, I'm used to getting talks about how I have to stay calm if I'm ever kidnapped, and make the kidnapper believe that your his friend, but this is bull.

Running from a troll that has this weird fascination with girls, like he's never seen one before. Did Valdus die? That troll was pretty aggressive looking, and my mother always told me that I should never leave a friend in need. But then again, was Valdus even a friend? Okay, now I'm starting to sound like my cousin Arabelle. I should probably go back and help Valdus, I mean, he was trying to help me.
Oh my dear lord, what if he's already dead? I was too late, I am so sorry Valdus! I heard footsteps behind me as I turned to see who was chasing me. It was Valdus running like his life depended on it. I slowed down and smiled as he shouted something inaudible.

"What?" I called out. He shouted again. I still couldn't hear what he was saying, and I was about to ask him to repeat what he had said, something caught my eye. Something was behind Valdus, and it scared the living crap out of me. It was the troll running after me and Valdus, passing by the thick branches and swooping over the mud puddles and bones, creating loud 'Thump' noises.
My smile faded and I turned to run even faster, the words Valdus had been chanting finally clicked in my thoughts.
                       'Run idiot!'

Maybe he could have been more polite about it, but when your being chased by a troll who most likely wants you for dinner, I don't think polite is in his vocabulary. I'm not much of a runner, my tiny calves and delicate feet were proof. Never in all of my life did I regret not being an athlete like I did now. Words could not express how much fear I was feeling at the moment. Poptarts and rainbows all forgotten.

Valdus caught up to me, we were running in sync as he turned to look at me. Time slowed as his serious face studied my horrified face. I knew that Merlin wouldn't be able to save me now, this wasn't a fairytale. Well, at least, not much of a fairytale. We were doomed, and he knew that as well as I did. He turned his head, closing his eyes as he seemed to get all of the information he needed on my face.

                        He stopped running.

I turned to look at him as he mouthed 'Go.' His eyes, warm and kind. My eyes widened in shock as he turned and opened his arms towards the troll running full speed at him.

"What the hell are you doing? Now is not the time to be hugging a troll!" I called out to him, slowing down. I stopped running also. He didn't seem to notice me, as the troll ripped a branch off of a nearby tree and swung it at the curly headed blonde idiot. My heart stopped as my eyes closed in fright. I heard a 'thump'. Everything became silent and my palms became sweaty. Did he kill the blonde who liked making Harry Potter references with me?

"You know... You're a pretty bad liar when it comes to important things." A voice rang out. I reopened my eyes. Atticus standing in his full glory in front of the gigantic branch. He had a smirk on his pale face, black hair falling a bit into his bright red eyes. Valdus looked shocked to be seeing this. I was shocked to be seeing this. Atticus was smirking down at Valdus, holding the branch that would send Valdus flying to god knows where.

The troll also seemed to be shocked for a moment. His eyes lingered on something behind Atticus's neck. I wanted to see what was holding that trolls interest. I needed to get closer, my instincts told me for some reason. I felt comfortable and in place now that Atticus was here.

"You guys do know that, this is exactly like something that would happen in one of those cliché books that I read?" I called out as all of their eyes snapped towards me. My eyes met Atticus's eyes as an unknown shiver passed up my spine, and the moment passed.

"Girl." That raspy voice that I knew so well in the past twenty minutes or so, called out again. I didn't fear it this time. This was weird, and I got this unknown sense of security in my bones. I looked at the disgusting creature as he grabbed a hold of the branch again. Dragging it upwards, and out of Atticus's grasp.

"Is this thing a pervert or something?" I whispered to myself as its eyes glinted with something evil in my direction. Its nasty smile never faltering. I backed a couple steps and into some more skeleton bones. The sense of security was now gone, and I felt alone. The feeling that I had never wanted to feel again was back, and a wave of sadness hit me. Why was this happening? Had I done something wrong in my life? I had done everything my mother had requested of me, why was this happening to me out of everyone?

'Count it as a blessing child. You only live once.'

Merlin? Why did he keep appearing in my head? Did that old man just hit me with a YOLO sentence? I sighed and my eyes met with Atticus's eyes. They were protective and cold, causing that familiar shiver to run up my spine again. I guess this was bound to happen anyway.

I rolled my shoulders and tilted my head to the side. I had no idea what I was doing, but I'm guessing that it would help. I charged at the troll.

"THIS IS A DIVERSION!" I screeched at the top of my lungs as I ran into the trolls green hairy leg. Was that even the right word to use? I saw it in movies and thought that it would be really cool to say. Ohwell. The plan was set, and I was determined to make it out alive. Wish me luck mother.
