Do you think that this could actually be the way out of here?" I ask my friends. They shrug in unison. I don't know either. But what I do know, is that we are all determined to get out of this nightmare we have become trapped in and into the dream that we've dreamt of.
"Well, lets stop standing and get going on trying to find these ingredients." Ally demands. We all nod in agreement.
"Yeah, standing here asking if this is justifiable is not going to do anything. At this point, I'll turn to whatever to get out of here and to the Fantasy world." Connor says.
"Oh, I hope Lily and Hazel are alright. . ." Ally fretts. Connor rubs her back while me and Melinda start to explore the attic. We skim around a bit, for the fact that we've already done this before.
"Alright, back to shuffling in this junk we go," I mutter to Melinda. Melinda sighs and nods in return.
"So, let's focus on one ingredient. . ." Melinda says.
"How about the fairy dust?" I ask.
"Let's do that." Melinda replies in agreement.
We spend hours on searching for even a speck of the glittery powder that makes fairies fly.
We meet in the center of the attic after hours of searching with nothing in our hands. Nothing. I mean, I should have expected it because we've already searched this attic a few times, but nothing? Actually I take these thoughts back as I look into a bin I didn't notice before. And. . . it has. . . nothing we need in it. Argh! I was hoping at least the mermaid tail was in there. I say some words that are too inappropriate for a fantasy story like this one and keep looking. Still, nothing. We gather back in about a few hours in the middle of the attic, our hands empty.
"Ugh! We're never getting out of here!" Melinda groans. I agree but there has to be a way.
"Maybe we have to keep looking?" Connor says with a raise in his voice by the end of his sentence as he notices the glares from the three of us.
"Okay, okay we don't have to do that." He says with a small smile. "Maybe there are some other clues or hints around this place?" He suggests after thinking a little bit.
"Connor could be right guys. We should check everywhere." I put emphasis on everywhere. Then, I get an idea. It's kind of dangerous but we'll try it.
"Wait! I have an idea."
I tell them my idea as they all say different versions of; "'I think it will work!'" and "'Great idea! Lets try it.'"
Ready to hear my idea? Ok. So, Ally is going to stand on someone's shoulders. Then I am going to stand on Ally's shoulders and if I have enough core strength, I will be able to pull myself up onto a ledge that sits just above our heads. Yep, like I said. Dangerous. The risk that any of us could fall was pretty high. Connor volunteered himself for the job of having Ally stand on his shoulders so Melinda and I helped her stand up. Connor stumbled a little but not too much. I wonder how much longer he'll hold up like this.
Melinda is making sure Ally won't fall while I look around for something tall and sturdy enough to hold me while I get on Ally's shoulders. Let me just say, it is extremely high on two people's shoulders. I think the only reason Melinda didn't volunteer was because she is scared of heights. So instead, she is helping Connor hold us up while he slowly walks closer to the ledge.
Finally, we get close enough where I can just lift myself up and look through the boxes. I safely pull myself up and onto the ledge. The first thing I notice is that there are a ton of boxes up here, and a rope ladder.
"Hey guys!" I shout down.
"Yeah?" they all say.
"You can come up!"
"But how?" Ally asks.
"With this!" I toss the rope ladder down and I look at their shocked faces. Melinda immediately climbs up and flops down on the ledge. She stands up and gasps at all the boxes. I'm not sure if it's from shock or disbelief.
"Hey Kylie, do you see anything around from where you're standing right now? I just want to check just in case so if there's nothing, the others don't have to come up there." She suggests.
I look around the area. The ledge is full of junk and boxes, just like the floor below. A large window sits on one side of the ledge, while a painting sits on the other.
It's then that another idea pops into my head.
"Hey guys, a light bulb just went off in my brain." I yell down. Connor and Ally still struggle on the rope ladder.
"What is it?" Connor asks, panting.
"Ok so there is a window up here. Maybe we can break free by crashing that window, and getting on the roof!" I shout. Connor's eyes grow magnificently.
"That's not a bad idea, but we still need some help down here!" He shouts.
Melinda rushes to his aid while I go off into the direction of the window. Obstacles such as books, pots and pans, blocks of wood, and cluttered boxes and bins make up the perimeter of it. I try to balance myself as I hop my way towards the wide glass barricade that separates us from the outside.
By the time I reach the window, Melinda, and Connor are steadily making their way over the mess of junk on the floor and slowly making their way towards where I stand.
"What can we use to break it without making noise?" I ask.
"Maybe-"
"Guys! I think I found something." I hear Connor shout from across the ledge.
"I'm coming," Ally shouts back. "You guys stay here and look for some more stuff." She says to us before stepping towards Connor. He seems to have a small box in his hand, and from where I stand, it seems to have jewels that glow brightly as the sun reflects on them.
"Ok, back to the task at hand. Maybe I could use some long stick or a heavy object to smash the window?" I suggest.
"Maybe, I can see if I-"
"We found one!"
"What?" Melinda and I shout, our voices turning into one. Connor and Ally high-five each other, and their eyes sparkle as they rush towards us with the box in their hands just slightly open to see glittery scales on the inside.
"An ingredient! We found the mermaid tail!"
