It was night fall, and we had found a small house, two rooms, a kitchen and living room. I still found it crazy how every house had different rooms.
But Ellie had barely spoke, and Joel less.
He's tried to talk to her but she ignores her. I didn't know what to do, and as we got to the house Ellie locked herself in one of the rooms. I gave her a bit of space, to heal. Joel just sat outside on the steps, so I went up to him, sitting next to him.
"That was some pretty fucked up shit, Joel." I said to him.
He grunted.
"Why did you do it?" I asked.
"Ellie... she reminds me of someone." Joel spoke, staring down at the pavement.
"Someone close?"
"Yeah."
I sighed, grabbing my fingers with my hand, in a fidgety way.
"I get it, you know. In a kind of, fucked up way, i get it." I said to him, causing him to look up.
"Ellie's special. I don't know what i'd do without her." I kept talking about how important Ellie is to me, and Joel makes eye contact with me.
"Thanks, Logan." He said.
"Yeah. Speaking of Ellie, I'm gonna go check up on her." I stood up and Joel nodded.
I walked inside and saw Ellie standing by the window, looking at the direction I was just sitting at.
"How're you feeling?" I asked, but she looekd spaced out.
"Ellie?" I walked in front of her.
"Shit, yeah?" She jumped a little as I snapped her out of her daydream.
"How do you feel?" I looked into her eyes with worry.
"I'm fine." She crossed her arms.
"Okay. How are you really?" I sat on the ledge by the window. She didn't break eye contact.
"What were you and him talking about?"
She saw that I was talking with Joel.
"Just, trying to understand the situation more."
"Ah." She nodded and broke eye contact. She looked a bit upset by me talking to Joel.
"So, you didn't answer my question. How are you doing?" I gave her a warm smile, grabbed her hand and pulled her closer to me, softly.
"Tired. Betrayed. Upset. But i'll be okay." She sighed, pulling her arm away.
She was distancing herself from me, but for good reason, so I didn't try to touch her much.
--Time Skip--
We were a mile from the gate. Ellie and I hadn't spoke much. Sometimes she just hugged me and cried, or didn't even make eye contact with me. But I let her take her time to heal.
Joel and I spoke a bit more, nothing too substantial, but I didn't want to be a dick to him. He just lost Ellie.
"It's us!" Joel shouted up at a guard at the gate.
The gate opened, and Ellie walked in front if me.
"Hey, can we go back to your place, and talk?" She fidgeted with her hands, looking down.
"Of course." I put my hand on her back, and we walked back to my place.
Joel went to his place.
As we got to my place, I opened the door. Ellie sat down.
"Can you sit down please?" She said.
I got a bit worried but did as she asked.
"What's up?" I said, softly.
"Logan. You know I love you, right?"
"Yeah, of course."
"But uhm... I don't think, i can do this. Anymore."
"Do what?" I didn't want it to be what I thought it was.
"Us." Her voice started to break.
"Oh." I started to fidget, as I felt my heart speeding up.
She sighed, as I asked why.
"After learning, what happened, I don't think I'm in the right, space, right now, to worry about a relationship."
I cleared my throat, staying quiet.
"Can you say something, please?" She asked.
"I don't know what to say, Ellie."
It was quiet. I was trying to suppress the urge to cry.
"I love you, Ellie." I said, breaking the silence.
"I love you too, Logan." She kissed my cheek, and stood up.I stayed sitting, as Ellie walked too the door, and left. A few minutes later I began to cry. But after I calmed down, I got up, and walked to Joel's house.
