17 ~ Understanding

"Licence and registration please," the police officer ordered.

I opened the glove compartment and took out the registration, handing it to Vic. Vic gave his licence and registration to the officer. He went back to his car to do whatever cops did in this situation and probably to issue a speeding fine.

"Are you aware you were speeding?" the police officer asked.

"Y- no.. maybe?" Vic answered awkwardly. Great the police officer probably thinks he's been drinking, which he was, but not enough to be drunk.

"Step out of the car Mr. Fuentes," the officer barked. Vic did as he was told as the officer began to evaluate if he was drunk or not. He passed every test except one, the breathalyzer.

"I'm going to have to arrest you for drunk driving," he simply said.

"Are you kidding? He passed every test except that one, and he barely went past the limit!" I interrupted. Vic's facial expression looked like he was telling me to shut up, so I did.

"Sir I don't think you should tell me how to do my job," he replied. I would of responded something rude in Vic's defense, but just because he has a badge and a hat I guess he has the right to be an asshole. I'm ninety-nine percent sure that he's arresting Vic just to benefit him and make money. I just nodded so I wouldn't make the situation any worse than it was.

"Okay good," he said.

"Can I bail him out here and now or what?" I asked with an annoyed tone.

"We will let him out tomorrow morning when he's sober since it's his first and only DUI. He'll recieve a fine. He could of had his licence suspended but he is lucky; on his background check he has no other offences."

Bullshit. He wasn't drunk. He barely even drank. He passed all the tests except one stupid one.

"Okay sir, I'll pick him up tomorrow," I replied.

"Bye Jaime," Vic said sadly, I could tell he was scared to stay in jail, even it was just until morning.

"I'll get you tomorrow Vic, okay?"

Vic nodded in response as he was led back to the police car. I got in Vic's car and drove to his parent's house. If Vic knew I was doing this, he'd kill me.

I drove into Mr. and Mrs. Fuentes driveway and parked. I got out of the car and went to their door. I nervously prepared myself before knocking on their door. I knocked.

"Hello Jaime," Vic's mom answered with an unusual tone.

"Mrs. Fuentes, I'd like to talk to you and Mr. Fuentes if that's all right," I said.

"Sure Jaime," she smiled, moving out of the doorway so I could walk in. Everyone from the party was gone except Mike. I urged Mike to come over and he did.

"I want to talk about Vic," I said, taking a seat at their dark wooden dining table. Mike took a seat next to me and his parents sat accross from us.

"Okay," Mr. and Mrs. Fuentes said in unison.

"I'm sorry Vic stormed out like that... he's kind of a mess right now. I didn't want you guys to think that I hated you or something when Vic took me out with him," I started, stuttering a bit in nervousness. They nodded, letting me know they were still listening. "I know it might sound ridiculous but me and Vic genuinely love each other."

"They really do," Mike interrupted to support me.

"I mean how do you know..." Mrs. Fuentes said with a questioning tone.

"Well how do you know you love Victor, your husband?" I asked. "You know the feeling where you're perfect for each other, everything about each other you love... well that's how Vic and I feel."

"It must be a phase or something," Mr. Fuentes said under his breath.

"It really isn't, it took a long time for Vic to even accept the fact that he loves me..." I began to think about his suicide attempt and everything, contemplating if I should tell his parents or not. "To be honest, he was waiting for the right time to tell you but he broke up with Caroline and she got pissed off and texted you about us and everything just didn't go as planned."

"I understand that, but do you think you guys are being silly, thinking you're in love?" asked Mrs. Fuentes.

"We don't think... we know," at this point, I wanted to scream, why were they so against their own son's happiness? I could tell how Vic lost it while talking to them.

"How do you know?"

"I've already explained this, how do you know you love your husband? Okay that's what it's like. There's simply nothing wrong with us! Please just trust me, Vic is having a hard time. I don't know if he wanted me to tell you this but he had a suicide attempt because Caroline freaked out at him about us being together. He simply can't take the thought of his parents disliking him because of who he loves and he wants to be happy and everyone around him to be happy, he wants to please everyone. He's trying so hard, trust me, he has to go talk to someone twice a week just so he won't try to kill himself again," I cried.

"He tried to kill himself?!" Mrs. Fuentes yelled in shock, covering her mouth. Even though he was alive, she was cying into her husband, who seemed expressionless. Mike and I nodded.

"He just needs you guys to accept our relationship, then he might feel better," I said after Mrs. Fuentes recollected herself.

"Okay, we believe you Jaime," Mrs. Fuentes said. "Right, Victor?"

"Yes, we believe you and I guess we're just going to have to accept your relationship with Vic," Mr. Fuentes said.

"Thank you so much!" I said, stand up and hugging them both across the table. They laughed at my over excitement.

"Where's Vic anyway?" Mike asked.

"Uhh... jail," I said, if I wanted Vic's parent's trust, I wasn't just going to lie.

"Jail?!" everyone said in unison.

"He was frustrated that you guys didn't believe him, and he began speeding. A cop pulled him over and declared him drunk and arrested him for drunk driving even though he didn't pass one test, I'm pretty sure he was just greedy for money. But you see, this is why Vic needs you, he goes a little crazy," I explained.

They nodded.

"I guess he really does love you," Mr. Fuentes said.

"Yes he does, and I really love him," I smiled, knowing that they finally got it, they understood.
