__"He- He's... alive?"
"Well- yes."
Now Marinette knew why she had felt drawn to the corridor. Adrien was down there, all alone. Marinette should be happy right now, so why didn't her heart flutter? Why didn't a smile overtake her stubborn frown? She still held a feeling of impending doom in her stomach, and until she was sure he was alright, she couldn't be happy. She wouldn't let hope creep in. She wouldn't believe he was alive until she saw him. So she sat, silent and focused on the floor, waiting for someone to tell her he was okay, that she could go and see him.
Luckily, it wasn't too long before Adrien's doctor emerged from the corridor. She explained that Adrien was stable, and thanks to the miraculous, he should make full recovery. The doctor said Adrien's lung would heal on its own, and there were no other serious injuries. Marinette asked why he flatlined, and the doctor explained it was a complication due to the strain on his lungs. Before she left, the doctor told Marinette that Adrien would be moved to a private room, because he was a VIP, and she could visit him in the morning.
More importantly, she had proof. He. Was. Alive.
Sabine and Tom signed papers and got in contact with Amelie before leaving the hospital- a difficult task as they struggled to keep Marinette from running to Adrien. But soon enough, they walked out into the icy air and made their way to the car.
Marinette was consumed by questions and worries, all she wanted to do was see Adrien, and she couldn't even do that. On the car ride home, Marinette sat in silence- ignoring her parents and her fingers drumming impatiently on the seat.
When they arrived home, despite her parents best efforts to talk to her, Marienette ran past them and shut herself in her room. Immediately, she pulled out her phone. She had what seemed like hundreds of missed calls from Alya and Nino, Chloe and even Lila. She ignored the missed calls, looking for the one friend she wanted, no, that she needed to talk to. She dialled the number and within two rings, she heard a familiar voice almost screaming through the phone."What happened Marinette, I've seen the news- is he okay?" Alya yelled into the phone.
Marinette took a deep breath and explained everything, from the fall, to the words the doctors had said only hours earlier. Soon, Alya was crying and blubbering along with Marinette. They talked about what would happen and the possibilities of Adrien recovery. They googled and researched as much as they could. Marinette wasn't sure if it was helping or causing her to overthink all over again, but time seemed to pass quicker than it had in a very long time.
"Alya I have to go, I've got something to do." Marinette said, as she started grabbing a few of Adrien's belongings and shoved them into a duffle bag.
"What're you up to Marinette?" Alya asked, concerned by her friend's quick change in tone.
"I'm going to the hospital." Marinette said firmly, almost like she was trying to convince herself.
"WHAT! Girl, it's 2am, visiting hours are over." Alya protested.
"Gottogobye," Marinette rushed as she hung up and threw her phone onto her desk.
Marinette dashed around the room grabbing blankets, photos and cosmetics, throwing them into the duffle bag. She paused when she noticed two little kwamis whispering in the corner of her room. They seemed to be arguing, but Marinette couldn't quite make out what they were saying.
"Now isn't the time to argue." She said as she stood, arms folded on her chest- glaring at the now silent creatures.
"Marinette, we don't think this is a good idea-" Tikki said as she flew to face Marinette. Closely following her was a very annoyed Plagg.
"We? No no Sugarcube, don't lie, I want to see Adrien." Plagg scoffed as he landed on Marinette's head. His annoyed glare left as he started to play with a strand of hair from Marinette's bangs.
Plagg had often done this with Adrien, grabbed onto two strands of hair and held on for dear life as Adrien battled to get him out. It gave him comfort, reminded him of what he once had. Plus- it always made Adrien laugh when he was sad, Plagg was hoping it would cheer Marinette up.
"Shut up Plagg!" Tikki snapped, flying over and pufhing Plagg off of the back off Marinette's head. 'Never mind' he thought.
Plagg tumbled in the air dramatically, whining he had been assaulted. Neither Marinette, or Tikki, found this amusing. Together, they stared at the Kwami until he was done with his little fit.
Taking Marinette by surprise, Tikki flew at Plagg and began wrestling with him.
"Enough," Marinette snapped as she peeled the Kwamis away from each other. They continued to wriggle in her hands, so she gave another warning "Please, you're both billions of years old. Can you stop it already!" It was no use, they wriggled out of her grasp and flew at each other once again.
"The love of my life is all alone in a hospital bed, trying to learn how to breathe again and I'm here having to deal with you two instead of being there to comfort him so can you just please STOP!"
Embarrassed, and guilty, the Kwamis separated and stayed quiet. Marinette shook her head and walked over to her desk to zip up the duffle bag.
"I still don't think this is a good idea Marinette, you both need to rest" Tikki said quietly, attempting not to aggravate her. She was fragile, and clearly still sensitive about the topic, Tikki tried not to push her luck.
"I need to see him Tikki, I need to see if he's alright" She pleaded with her Kwami, as she clamored up the ladder and onto her bed.
"Please just think about this, what if he's not okay, and you have to see him hooked up to machines and with a tube down his throat. You read it online yourself, a collapsed lung could mean he needs a breathing tube, I don't think it will be good for you to see him like that!" The Kwami continued.
"But what if he is okay Tikki? He'll be awake and alone and scared, and so would I. And I'm sure Plagg would too. Plagg, you want to see Adrien right?" Marinette asked.
Plagg looked at Tikki, then at Marinette. He didn't like the pressure- he desperately wanted to be with Adrien again, but in no way did he want to go against Tikki. He shrugged his shoulders and said,
"Don't involve me, unless there's Camembert involved- then ask away."
Both Marinette and Tikki rolled their eyes.
"I'm sorry Tikki- but this is my decision. Spots on."
After she transformed, and was about to swing off towards the hospital, when she noticed Plagg giving her a disappointed look,
"She will yell about that later you know." He said, a smirk playing across his lips.
"You know, I'm glad you're not my Kwami." Marientte said sarcastically, a grin on her face for the first time that night.
"I'm telling Adrien you said that."
"Ooo I'm so scared." Marinette giggled, before signalling Plagg to hide in her pig tail.
In five minutes, she arrived at the hospital and snuck round to the VIP wing. Each window she passed, she peered in and studied the facthe of the sleeping patients. In no time, she found Adrien. His window was slightly open, so she pushed it up and swung in, landing softly so she wouldn't wake him. As she walked closer to the bed, relief flooded her when she saw he didn't have a breathing tube, only heart monitors an IV drip.
Marinette felt bad for waking him, she needed to hear his voice. She clicked on a lamp and took Adrien's hand. As he stirred, Marinette felt a soft tear fall down her cheek.. His eyes flickered open, and at the sight of his lady he let a small, weak smile show.
"M'lady," He said quietly before closing his eyes and drifting off to sleep once again.
"My Prince." She whispered back.
