Heejae didn't remember the last time she felt her heart fluttering or butterflies taking off in her belly as if it was free real estate. It was a weird but new feeling. Totally not scary.
What scared her, however, was the man who was the reason behind these weird feelings. She absolutely didn't want Yoongi to be the reason but he was. Just a little smile with a hello from him had her throat drying up.
Her eyes were drawn to him immediately upon entering the room. She had never realised when he had managed to become her beacon in a room full of people. It was quite natural, that her gaze went to his at the same time he lifted his head up to see her.
Yoongi quickly looked away though, after greeting her. His lazy looking sharp eyes connecting with his friend's wide, panic filled eyes. He watched the woman get up, trying to cover up her face from the gazes of the new comers.
Heejae frowned at his reaction. Following his line of sight, she saw a rather familiar woman trying to escape from Kim Seokjin's hold. Their eyes met, the woman's eyes wide as if a deer caught in lights.
Heejae understood why she was panicked and tried passing her an encouraging smile. Beside her, Anika too caught up to the situation. "Hello, miss," her accented voice froze the whole room, anticipation thrumming in their veins.
"I'm Anika and this is Heejae," she continued despite the heavy, tense silence. "I can see you are trying to leave but please stay a while. We would love to make friends with you."
The woman took a visibly deep breath and returned their smiles. "I'm Choi Sehee and I am-"
"My girlfriend," Seokjin finally spoke up, his arm comfortingly wrapped around Sehee's shoulder. Heejae smirked, "I figured that much. You kept her hidden too long, Seokjin. No fair. Sehee-shi could've done with more female company."He gave the women a lopsided grin. "My apologies, ladies. Now, please join us for dinner before it gets cold." The tension dissipated immediately at the playful nature of the conversation. The boys knew that these two women could be trusted wholeheartedly.
Chuckling, the women moved to sit on the remaining unoccupied seats. By unoccupied seats, it meant, Heejae sat down beside Yoongi after he 'not-so-subtly' pushed Jimin out of his seat. Anika sat down beside her as well, finding it the most comfortable spot. Despite her initial display of courage of speaking up first with Sehee, she was quite shy. Even around men she had worked with since their early days in the industry.
Or maybe, it was just Jimin she was shy of as he kept shooting her glances.
"Jimin likes her," Yoongi whispered discreetly in Heejae's ear, making her sigh. She turned around to meet his eyes, his cheeks puffed up as he chewed on his food. "He shouldn't though. Atleast, not until Anika decides to take a firm step."
Yoongi shrugged. "It's not our place to say anything nor can we force someone to feel." Heejae hummed quietly, taking a bite of her own food. "Anyways, how was your day?" She froze at his whispered words, her eyes darting around to see if anyone was paying attention to them. But to her relief, everyone was busy in their own world.
"Do you think this is right place for you to ask me about my day?" she hissed at him, her heart beating wildly in her chest. "We don't have the best image for the word 'friends', you know?"
The man could only smile, avoiding the inquisitive eyes of his two friends sitting across him. "It's never too late to become friends, PD-nim. And it's not like I'm doing anything indecent. This, however," he said, his hand discreetly landing on her knee below the table. "Would be called indecent. Right, Jae?"
Sucking in a sharp breath, the woman slapped away her partner's hand away from her leg, prompting him to let out a chuckle. She hoped her face wasn't as red as she felt it could be, looking around again to see if anyone noticed, only to see the couple sitting across them being lovey dovey.
She couldn't understand why, but her heart squeezed painfully as she watched Seokjin lovingly caress his girlfriend's face. Unknowingly her eyes went to Yoongi, who was busy eating and talking to Namjoon who sat beside him.
Heejae shook her head, stuffing her mouth with some of her spicy noodles, forcing down the sudden thought of 'PDA' with Yoongi. What was wrong with her today? Yoongi wasn't her boyfriend. He could never be and yet, he was starting to mess with her heart with his words of concern.
Maybe... maybe it was time to end this before things took a turn for bad.
"Heejae-shi, try the bulgogi," Sehee said, cutting right through her daze. "You'll like it." She passed a piece of the red meat coated in savoury sauce. Before she could politely decline the woman's offer, Yoongi's hand shot out, taking the piece of meat in his own chopsticks.
"She doesn't eat red meat," he said simply, continuing to eat. Heejae stared at the man beside her with her jaw slack. She completely missed the way Sehee's lips quirked up in satisfaction. Her suspicions were proven right and so had she won her bet with Jin.
"How do you know she doesn't like red meat?" Namjoon asked looking between the duo. Yoongi still wouldn't look up from his bowl of ramen. "She told me," he again replied casually, as if discussing the weather.
"And when did she tell you?" Taehyung asked next, still a little sour about his words from a few days ago. Yoongi sighed, finally looking into Taehyung's eyes. "When you weren't paying attention. Now, go back to eating."
Heejae released a breath she didn't she was holding as questions were flying. She wiped her brow with a tissue, perspiration due to nervousness clear. In the midst of her actions, her eyes met with Sehee's soft ones. She gave the other woman a reassuring smile, indicating that her secret was safe with her.
But it didn't make her feel better in the least. Things were starting to get messed up. Starting with the conversations, to the show of possessiveness and now even remembering her likes and dislikes.
"You are thinking too hard, Jae," Yoongi murmured beside her, putting a dumpling in her bowl, the bottom side of it crisp and golden. Her favourite types. "Eat up fast, baby. We've got work to do later."
Heejae gulped, her heart hammering against her rib cage as the nickname slipped past his thin, pink lips smoothly. As Yoongi told her to do, she ate up, but her whole focus was distorted now. The only thoughts in her mind were about her relationship with Yoongi.
They had no future together.
