CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX : FORTUNE COOKIES ARE WEIRDLY ACCURATE

|

FROM THIS CHAPTER ON, THERE WILL BE MANGA SPOILERS !! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED .

the next day came and the winter chill was settling in. you and toga went for an inconspicuous walk in the city, watching the news on the tvs in those little electronic shops. you sighed in relief when you heard that the victim, eri, was recovered and currently being housed with the heroes in UA.

"n/n you never told me about tomura," she whispered to you and you threw your head back, groaning. this girl never gives up some good gossip.

"well, he broke off that 'arrangement' with me. said i didn't belong and whatnot. then last night, he came over to try and patch things up... all in all, we're on pretty awkward terms." you sighed.

there was no doubt you still had feelings for the leader but you also still had self-respect. he didn't get to just berate you and then expect you to forget about it. it would take a lot more than little compliments to win you over now.

toga tsked. "tomura's weird. he's not used to affection or anything like that. he's probably pushing you away cuz he's scared or something. he's smart enough to plot a whole scheme and dumb enough to let someone like you slip away."

you smiled and bumped her shoulder. "it's weird seeing you not all trigger happy."

"i guess that is my true nature, isn't it?" she giggled, prancing up further. you jogged to catch up. her words gave you something to think about on the way back home.

"we're going to walk around," shigaraki declared as the group was gathered in front of him (save dabi, of course). "i have someone we have to see. prepare to leave in ten minutes."

everyone groaned— it was getting colder and you barely had anything to wear jacket-wise. you cursed as you tried thinking if you could quickly run to a store and snag something in time.

but before you could, a hand extended to you, a long coat in hand. it was black and new but very similar to shigaraki's, if not identical...

shigaraki thrust it to you again. "hurry up and take it."

you held your tongue as you took it from him, saying 'thank you' even though he was already walking away. it smelled new, like a car fresh out of the dealership, and it encompassed your body perfectly. it stopped just short of your ankles and had a fuzzy lining inside for warmth.

smiling softly to yourself, you slipped your hands into the pockets, feeling a few small wrapped snacks in there. your eyes flickered to shigaraki who made an obvious point to not look at you. you rolled your eyes, smiling wider. your eyes twinkled as you fought a fond laugh. he's an adorable idiot.

his apology became more believable. he just sucked at expressing himself, leading him to get frustrated easily and lash out.

you sifted out a fortune cookie, snacking on it while everyone continued to get ready. savoring the slight sweetness, you peeled open the little slip of paper.

it read: things will turn out nicely. have faith.

maybe they will, you thought, eyes studying shigarki. maybe they will.

you all went to a little religious group, raiding it for things and racking up another death toll. shigaraki padded around the room, pacing menacingly. he was patient, yes, but everyone's patience has a limit.

"oh. it broke." toga pouted, looking at her needle. compress stood next to her, rolling his prosthetic arm.

"this is getting a bit rusty, too." he frowned. you stepped over to the bodies to inspect it carefully. without proper materials to clean it, it had fallen into a less-than-ideal condition. "we'll have to get giran to replace it."

"and where will we get the funds for that?" you mumbled. the league wasn't the wealthiest out there, despite being the top villain group. shigaraki met your eyes, hearing what you said.

he told everyone to look for anything they wanted to keep among the wreckage and stay there until he figured out their next move.

spinner grumbled to himself, while shigaraki slouched on a nearby couch. even dabi had returned, demanding that you patch up his burns.

"can't you ask nicely?" you huffed, and rolled your eyes, taking the spiky-haired man's arms in yours and healing them.

"it's your job isn't it?" he shot back, earning a glare from you. you knew dabi was a jerk, and usually you could put up with it, but you really weren't in the mood for his asshole behaviour.

"shit!" you heard and you snapped out of your daze, glancing at dabi who was pinned on the ground by your previously-dormant spider limbs. "fuck, y/n, get it off!"

you were about to feverishly apologize... but then you decided that you should put him in his place and just propped your face on your palm. "hmm, i dunno. maybe you should say sorry first?"

"no way in hell." he scoffed before wheezing as you pressed down on him harder. "fUCK, okay sorry!"

you relented and dabi gasped as he sat up, immediately lunging at you. yelping as you lurched backwards to avoid him, he was yet again pinned by the limbs. "you know how tiring it is to constantly heal your burns? it's like my life force is being drained from me."

"okay and?" he droned, trying not to show how he was struggling.

"i am literally giving you my vitality. 'it's your job isn't it?' is not the kind of appreciation i want." your lips as you shot him a threatening smile. you retracted the limbs and adjusted on the couch, stretching as your back felt all-in-place again.

dabi grumbled as he sat down again, flipping a middle finger in your direction. you returned the gesture before focusing on toga and twice as they tried on different pieces of jewelry.

"where are we going, shigaraki?" spinner asked in the midst of the silence, causing all attention to go to him and the leader. "i thought you were going to open up a world of change! answer me, where are we heading?"

shigaraki stared at spinner. there was so many things on his mind right now. the future of the league, you, taking down the symbol of peace, getting proper funds, you, gaining more power...

his eyes darted to where he last saw you. he was pleased to see you watching him, concerned, as spinner wrung his shirt in his hands and yanked him forward. your lips were pressed tight and your eyebrows were furrowed as you glanced between the scuffle just waiting to unfold.

your eyes widened incredulously when he decided to turn his attention to you rather than the matter at hand. you gestured curtly to spinner, motioning him to focus on his distressed ally.

"look at me!" spinner yelled and shigaraki winced slightly.

"like i said—"

and then the building was crushed.
