POV: Harry Styles
I hand the employee the crumpled fiver from the back pocket of my jeans and collect a baseball from the basket by my feet. I take a step back and push up the sleeves of my white T-shirt exposing my inked arms.
This random guy next to me, who after failing to hit the coconut, sent his fist colliding with my shoulder.
"Go on mate init, show 'em how it's done!" He blunders over the music encouraging me on.
I jump about on the spot and begin to wind back my arm twisting my shoulder blade a few times beforehand.
Launching the ball, it collides with the centre coconut sending it free falling to the ground. A roar of applause erupts from around me. The employee receives the fallen coconut and awards me it as my prize.
"Hey man, what's your secret? I swear it was rigged until you came along and showed me up bruv." The dude from earlier questions as he grabs me round the shoulders.
"Honestly? You have just got to imagine it and believe in yourself," I tell him truthfully.
"Really? Are you sure? He responds stopping and furrowing his brow.
"Yeah that's it man, I believe in you," I say waving him off in the direction of the coconut shack.
"Thanks!" He calls out excitedly rushing back to tackle the coconut shy.
I walked away feeling pleased with my win, juggling the coconut in my hand. Before I even manged to get anywhere a trio of high school girls approach me squirming unable to contain their excitement.
The overly friendly girl in the middle, the only blonde one, was obviously the leader of their little group. The other two brunettes awkwardly cling to her sides like a magnet to a fridge.
Despite them being less loud than the blonde girl, the jealous and competitive atmosphere radiated from the group.
"Hey there young man, see you've won a coconut," the blonde one whispers seductively as she tries to cover her petite frame with her tiny white fluffy jacket. Resulting in respected eye rolls from the other two.
"ummm... hi," I shrug and hold up the coconut to be admired.
"I haven't seen you before and trust me I know everyone around here," the tall brunette chimes in with a wide smile.
"Yeah, I've just moved here..." I answer starting to get bored and wanting to leave.
I gaze around uninterested in the small talk of the tenacious over eager girls. Amongst all the chaos of the lights and sound, I descry a young girl still and alone. She is sitting unaccompanied on a park bench gracefully illuminated by the lights of the Ferris wheel.
"Back off, he's mine," the light-haired one threateningly whispers over her shoulder as if I wasn't right there.
"Here you can have this, I don't need it," I stretch out my arm with the coconut in my palm only for it to be snatched up by the blonde girl who in turn let out a small bubbly giggle.
The trio pettily begin arguing over who gets the coconut, completely ignoring my existence. I turn and start to lightly jog over to the mysterious girl on the bench, flicking mud onto the cuffs of my jeans as I go.
"JESUS CHRIST BRAD, I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT I EVEN LIKED YOU!" Someone screams causing me to stop in my tracks.
I look up to locate the source of the sound. At the top of the Ferris wheel a couple seem to be arguing the girl being very over the top and dramatic about it. However it seems like they are never going to stop.
'This is a waste of time' - I think to myself, promptly remembering what I was doing. I return my gaze to the park bench but this time the girl is no where to be seen. I look around intensely. But as the crowd disperses the copious faces blur together. I sigh defeated.
like a sheep, I follow the herd away from the (now disserted) Ferris Wheel and into the depth of the carnival. I wander aimlessly still hoping to be united with her.
Eventually, the people become less and less and the lights slowly dim. 'I should be getting home soon before my dad starts to get worried' I suppose and begin the journey out of the maze. I step out of the light into the darkness leaving behind the machinery and technology for plants and forestry.
In my peripheral vision I spot a bright light come and go. Debating whether to ignore it or investigate I fumble with the thought of the potential that someone is in danger. I sprint unknowingly towards where I recall the light being.
As I came closer I realised that I was heading towards a dark building as the outline became distinguishable from the surrounding trees. I traced the steps of who was here before me and lung up the rickety staircase to the entrance.
I lurch open the hefty door letting the familiar light escape and launch myself inside allowing the door to slam behind me.
After going through the blackout curtain, I am hit with a ray of blue artificial light. Millions of mirrors line the walls of the internal establishment.
"Oh! It's a mirror maze, that's nice" I mumble under my breath. I tuck the loose strands of my slightly sweaty hair back into my bandana and readjust my restrictive skinny jeans. I cautiously negotiate through the maze. There! Just up ahead. A person.
Trying to catch up with them, I increase my pace veering around the panels. Mirror after mirror. Wall after wall. I run
BANG!
I keep running, faster than before, concerned about what I'm going to encounter. There is she! The lonely girl, not so lonely now. She stares at me through the mirror concerned, confused and concussed. I freeze.
Suddenly it hits, A piece of my heart breaks as I recollect on how selfish I was. This is my fault. This is my mess. This is my responsibility now. She.
