It had been during the battle against the dark elves, when Loki had to say goodbye to his love one last time.
Only with the difference, that this time it was him, who had to let Y/n go and this time, it was final.
Flashback
Loki was taking down one of the dark elves, his brother and his love fighting side by side with him. It had been months since the god of mischief last used his daggers, but thankfully, he hadn't lost his skill.
It looked like they were winning, until the dark prince heard the worst noise, he could possibly imagine: Y/n's pain filled scream, as one of the three elves she was fighting, run her trough with a sword.
He immediately threw one of his daggers at the creature, but it was too late. The love of his life laid on the dirty ground, blood dripping down from her hand, that desperately clutched the wound.
Loki ignored his surroundings, not even registering when his brother finished off the last dark elves and rushed towards Y/n, cradling her body in his arms.
He held her close, brushing a single strand of hair to the side. "My love, you will be alright. I promise."
Y/n only smiled sadly, knowing he wouldn't be able to keep that promise. She felt that this was her end, so she chose to tell her god how much she loved him one last time.
"L-Lokes, I-"
"Shh, my darling, do not waste your energy on talking."
"Loki, we both- argh- know that I will- will not survive." She groaned in pain, the need to close her eyes growing by every second that passed. The god let out a single sob, not wanting to accept it.
"I love you, my prince. More than anything."
"I love you too, darling... Please don't leave me... I- I need you."A tear rolled down Y/n's cheek, leaving a clean streak on her grimy skin.
She inhaled one last time, whispering "I'm sorry" to the prince, before closing her eyes for good.
The god pulled her closer, holding her lifeless body against his chest, as if his own heartbeat could transfer in his loves still chest.
He cried over her corpse, sobs rippling through his chest as he finally accepted, that Y/n was gone.
Y/n's pov
All I remember, is darkness.
No pain, no feelings, just darkness.
Like an endless night, without any stars.
It was peaceful.
Until I felt a pulling sensation.
It was forcing me in a direction, where I didn't know. Until suddenly a bright light appeared, dragging me away from the darkness.
Abruptly the pulling stopped, and I opened my eyes.
All at once, my memories came rushing back and when I looked around, I finally recognised where I was.
The battlefield.
I proceeded to look around, until I saw my hand and realized that it was almost transparent.
Then I understood what had happened.
Many people said, that if you had unfinished business when you died, your soul can't rest. But thankfully I knew what, or more precisely who, my unfinished business was.
I had to find Loki.
3rd person pov
The god of mischief sat on the floor of his chambers, curtains closed and most of his furniture destroyed.
In the first weeks, Thor had tried to convince him to eat, but he couldn't. Every time he tried to, the image of Y/n, dead in his arms came back into his mind, taking away all his hunger.
Odin had eased his punishment, so that now he was trapped in his chambers, a spell making it impossible to leave. Not that Loki wanted to, quite on the contrary.
He felt as if he deserved to be locked away in the depths of the dungeons, because he let the one person, he loved die. The dark prince felt like a failure. His mother was dead, and it was his fault, as was his precious Y/n.
Loki heard the door open, but didn't bother to look up, since the only one who ever visited him, was his brother.
"Go away Thor. I do not want any of your food."
The door closed again, darkness filling the room once more.
"You should eat, Lokes."
His head snapped up, eyes wide in disbelieve. "You- This- this can't be real... Am I starting to imagine things? Have I finally gone mad?" The god's voice was shaky, tears starting to form in his eyes.
Because even if it was only his imagination, it looked real.
Y/n felt her not existent heart squeeze painfully, when she saw in what state Loki was. She kneeled down beside him, laying a cold hand on his cheek.
"I'm here Lokes. I may not be alive, but I'll never leave you."
A single tear made its way down on Loki's cheek, pain evident in his eyes. "Y/n... H-how are you here? I- You were gone..."
"I am gone, Lokes. But sometimes, when people have unfinished business, they can... take care of it, before they move on for good. And you are my unfinished business."
He furrowed his brows in confusion, making her sigh. "Look, I know you. I was sure you'd blame yourself and the thought of you doing exactly, what you are doing now, made it impossible for me to leave."
Now the god let out an unamused huff. "Darling, it is my fault that- that you are gone." Y/n gently stroked his hair trying to find a way to tell him, he was not responsible for her death.
"Lokes, there is nothing you could have done, but even if there was, I don't want you to live in misery. Please, you have to move on... Just because I lost my life, doesn't mean, that you have to waste yours."
"Move on?! Y/n, you were all I had and now... What should I keep living for?"
The woman grabbed Loki's chin harshly with her cold fingers, forcing him to look at her. "Don't ever, ever say that again! If you even think about committing suicide, or doing something reckless, I swear, I will find a way to kill you a second time."
The broken prince smiled at his love, taking the hand she put under his chin and put it to his cheek, leaning into the touch.
"I do not doubt it, darling. But I- I need you."
Her features softened, sadness showing in her eyes. "Lokes, I know. I need you too, but it isn't possible... At some point I have to go, and you have to let me go. I want you to be happy. Even if that means loving someone else."
"Y/n, even if I wanted to, I could never love someone other than you."
She smiled sadly, sliding down on the wall next to her god.
"Loki, I want you to know, that I will always be there, even when you can't see me, and one day, we will meet again."
"This is goodbye, isn't it?"
"I'm afraid so. One last goodbye."
Tears rolled down on Loki's face, but he smiled, nevertheless. "That also means that there will be one last hello, doesn't it?"
Y/n smiled back, nodding her head. "It does. But hopefully, only in far future. Live your life while it lasts, ok?"
"Alright. I promise."
The woman looked up at him, gently tugging his head down, until their lips met. When they pulled apart Y/n slowly started to fade, until she was merely anything more than a shadow, but Loki heard her last silent whisper. "I love you."
