"Dad, I get it!" I yell with a flushing face.

He lets go of me and screams something after me as I hurry out from the apartment. A relieved sigh escapes my lips as I walk out on the street. The air is fresh and there is not a single cloud on the pitch blue sky.

I'm on my way to meet Aliyah at the basketball court. It's only eight o'clock in the morning so the streets are quite empty.

"Are you okay?" a sudden voice asks.

I spin around, only to see a boy looking at me with concerned eyes. He has a round face, freckles and copper brown hair. He looks like he is straight from the countryside.

I don't know what to answer. The boy is looking at something on my cheek and when I reach my hands to my face I realize my skin is still blossoming red and there are bruises over my cheekbones.

"Y-yeah. I'm fine." I tell him with round eyes. "It's just- it's nothing."

"Well, alright. I guess I shouldn't try and involve myself. I'm not from here." he chuckles shyly. He has a sweet and genuine smile that makes my heart jolt with joy.

"Where are you from?"

"Kentucky. I'm here with my class for two days. I'm going home tomorrow." he tells me.

"Oh. And where are your classmates?"

"Well, I'm sort of new to my class. I don't really know anyone yet." Wow, so they just leave him? That's terrible! I frown with empathy for him.

"Do you want to join me? I'm meeting some friends at the ball court." I ask, weighing back and forth on my feet nervously as I wait for his answer.

"Sure! That'd be cool!" he says with a smile that makes his eyes glitter. "I'm John, by the way."

"Laura. Nice to meet you." I cheer and reach my hand out to shake his large one.

We start walking together and the conversation flows on naturally. It's like we have so much to talk about and I'm almost sad when we finally arrive by the court.

My body bubbles with pride as I walk up to the gang with John by my side. He feels so tall and powerful from next to me. The others are going to be completely baffled!

"Hey, guys!" I yell so that the whole gang turns toward John and I.

John reaches his hand out to greet everyone who look like they've just seen an alien or something. They shake his hand with pure confusion on their faces. Everything flows on very good until John reaches his hand for Jim who looks at John's hand as if it were some contagious bacteria. I feel a sting of empathy for John as I remember how Jim made me feel the first times he acted rudely toward me.

"Who the fuck are you?" Jim hisses so the whole gang grimaces.

John takes an uncertain step back and sends a quick glance in my direction.

"Oh, sorry." I quickly say with a faked smile in Jim's direction who rolls his eyes. "This is John. I just met him actually. He's on a trip to New York with his school."

Jim looks more than confused as some of the gang members greet John again, patting his back and all. Woah, they seem to like him?

"So... For how long is your boyfriend gonna' be here?" Jim asks and contemptuously meets my gaze.

"I'm not her boyfriend?" John confronts with furrowed brows. I join his side by crooking my arm in his and glaring angrily at Jim.

"Really?" Jim huffs. "You seem extremely turned on by each other."

"What's that even supposed to mean?" John spits with challenge so that everyone gasps. No, John! Just shut up!

Instead of starting a fight, Jim just walks away and picks up a basketball. John and I walk over to the fence and he talks to me while I switch shoes.

"What's wrong with that guy?" he laughs.

"I have no idea." I chuckle.

John helps me up on my feet and we walk over to the others while laughing at the most random things. We're pushing each other around as if we've been best friends forever. I can't help but feel Jim's cold eyes on me but I decide to ignore it.

It's not only Jim who is looking at us, everyone is.

"Are we gonna' play or what?!" Jim yells so my body freezes. He looks furious.

I inhale a deep breath and let go of John. I don't want to piss off Jim even more when he's in such a bad mood.

Aliyah starts dividing us into teams and she doesn't even get to reach me until Jim starts shouting again:

"Laura, you can go fucking sit down cus' everyone knows you're just gonna' be in the way."

My heart sinks in my chest and I get so shocked by his words that I directly go and sit down by the fence. Argh! What's wrong with me!? Why can't I confront him?

The match starts and Jim takes it surprisingly calm since his body seems to be boiling with anger.

John plays very good and I feel a wave of pride as he even succeeds to take the ball from Jim. Hah! My happiness takes a quick turn as I see the look in Jim's eyes. No, no... He balls his fists and strikes over the court, toward John.

"John! Look out!" I yell, but it's too late. Jim pushes John in the back so he comes flying to the ground with a thump.

Jim quickly walks away as if nothing happened, but John is laying still on the ground with a panicked expression on his face. He's holding onto his wrist while groaning in pain.

"John!" I scream and run up to him.

"Shit. It's my wrist." he breaths. What am I supposed to do?!

"Oh, sorry my man!" Jim yells. He is walking around on the court with nonchalance. "I really didn't mean to." he adds in.

My body is trembling and I can't control the anger anymore as I run toward Jim with clenched jaw. When I reach up to him I give him a hard push in the chest so he gasps.

"What the fuck is your problem, you idiot!?" I shout. "You did it on purpose!"

"Chill out girl. Your boyfriend is fine. Look, he's walking away now, maybe you should go after, huh?"

Oh, how bad I want to hit him in his perfect face. So hard that blood comes pouring from his nose! I swear I will do it!
