Kiara:
"Yo, what the fuck? That's a foul!" Chris yelled, standing up in anger.
"No it wasn't!" Devon laughed. "You're just mad your team's finna lose."
We were all at Devon's house, waiting for the Clemson v Notre Dame basketball game to end. It was close, with two minutes left in the second half and Notre Dame being up by 4-- much to Chris' dismay. Whitney, Moni, T, and I half watched the game but were way more entertained by the way Devon and Chris were acting. Men did not play about their sports.
The doorbell rang, signaling that our pizza delivery had arrived. "I'll get it." I stood up from the couch and answered the door.
"Devon?" The man asked.
"More or less." I took the boxes and thanked him, before moving to set the food down on the table in the living room.
"Let's go!" Chris yelled, as one of the Clemson players scored a 3 pointer.
"Y'all still finna lose, bitch ass." Devon said, though he looked a little nervous.
Instead of watching the last of the game, I decided to go into the kitchen. I began to arrange the food and drinks on the counter in a way that would make them most accessible and easier to clean up afterwards. Opening the boxes, I inhaled the heavenly aroma that was marinara and cheese. My stomach growled happily, anxious to have the contents in it.
"That's game!" Devon exclaimed, as the buzzer sounded through the television.
"No, dammit!" Chris groaned, confirming that Clemson had lost by that single point. I went back into the living room to see the girls laughing at the way Devon was teasing Chris, who was kneeling on the ground with his head in his hands. I rolled my eyes with a laugh. So dramatic.
"Aw, poor Chris." Tiana jokingly pouted.
"If it makes you feel better," Whitney started, "I was rooting for Clemson too... just not as hard as you."
Devon started laughing. "Nah he mad now, cuz he gotta buy me Yeezy's."
"Man, whatever, just send me the order." Chris grumbled with an eye roll, standing up straight again.
"Alright, alright." I started, going to loop my arm around my boyfriend's. "I'm starving. Can we eat now?"
"Please, my stomach's touching my back." Monica grumbled.
Everybody quickly moved to the kitchen to get a plate of food. As we all enjoyed the pizza, chips, and drinks, we talked and listened to music off of Devon's television.
"-- and now my mom is pushing me to look at other schools." Whitney finished with a frustrated sigh.
"Damn, that's really annoying." Tiana frowned. We were in the middle of talking about what we wanted to do with our lives in the future, and when the topic of college came up, Whitney couldn't stop herself from airing out her frustrations to us. She explained that her parents met at UNC: Chapel Hill and were really pushing for her to apply there and to other prestigious schools. That wasn't her top choice though, causing her to get into constant arguments with her mother.
"So where do you want to actually go?" Devon asked.
"I really wanna go to Spelman, but my mom is so against it. Any time I ask her why, she won't give me a real answer. I overheard her telling my dad that she wouldn't dare let me go to one of those wild schools. She keeps making negative statements about the school that are just factually untrue, so I know she hasn't even done real research on it."
"Odd how the number 1 HBCU in the country is suddenly a wild school." Monica scoffed. I knew Moni already didn't like Whitney's parents, because while they didn't care that their daughter was bisexual, Whitney's parents-- her mom more so than her dad-- seemed to really dislike Monica for no reason. According to Monica, Whitney's mom gave her anti-black vibes.
