The girls and I were buzzing with excitement, as we sat in the cafeteria to wait for Coach B. It was the basketball team's first Friday away game, and we were traveling with them to a school nearly an hour away from Chancley.
Kaycee's mom had brought us some type of Italian pasta with breadsticks and salad. I was initially hesitant to eat some, because I wasn't used to eating home cooked meals made by white people, but it was actually kind of decent. See y'all? Growth.
"Alright ladies!" Coach B walked into the cafeteria with a large box. "Today's our first away game, and thankfully our bows and warmups came in."
We all excitedly crowded around her to see what our new bows and warmup suits looked like. Coach pulled out a cheer bow to show off Kaycee's design. It was simple, but very cute. Since our school colors were red and white, the design was all red with white sparkles. The bow was stiff and the glitter thankfully didn't come off on her hands. Coach proceeded to hand them out to us.
"Hey Cap, what'd you say our hairstyle was?" Tiana asked Kaycee.
"Just a bun." She responded. "Something simple."
"And now... the warmups!" Coach B excitedly pulled off her coat to model the fit. She wore a fitted, black tracksuit that showed off her curvy figure. On the left breast, it spelled CHS Winter Cheer in red, sparkly letters. Underneath that was Coach B in white, cursive font. We all lined up to get our pantsuits.
"I want y'all to put on your cheer tops, but wear the jacket and pants for the bus ride so you're more comfortable. Y'all can put your skirts on at the school." She looked at the name on the first package. "Tiana!"
Tiana took the package from our coach, standing away from the line to wait for Monica and I. Coach B finished passing them out, before instructing us to get hair and makeup done as quickly as possible since we had to leave in less than an hour. We all rushed into the bathrooms to get ready.
"Kiara, can I ask you a question? I've been dying to know." Kaycee started.
I pulled my cheer top over my head, pushing my arms through the sleeves. "Wassup?"
"Are you and Chris Marks a thing?"
The other girls stared at me, awaiting my answer. "Yeah, we're together." I honestly answered.
They all started talking at once. "You're so lucky!" Gwen gushed. "He's literally the best player on the team."
Rachel fanned herself. "And probably the hottest guy in school."
"He seems so sweet too!" Another cheer mate, Faith, exclaimed. "Almost all the guy athletes here are trash. Chris is cute and a gentleman."
I didn't know if I really liked the girls fawning over my boyfriend, but I simply laughed. "He's indeed all of the above. I'm very lucky."
"Well, he's lucky too." Faith noted. "I've overheard a lot of guys go on about how hot they think you are, Kiara. You could've been had any dude of your choice."
I pulled the formfitting pants over my spandex. "I wouldn't say that."
"Oh my God, are you serious?" Gwen exclaimed. "You literally have the perfect body! Like, look at your ass in that! I wish mine looked that good."
The girls all began to go off about how nice of a butt I had, making me mildly uncomfortable. I was in love with my body, but I never really thought other girls at my school would be envious of it. I honestly figured since body norms differ in the Black and white communities, they'd consider me too curvaceous.
