Chapter Eleven
I woke to the snoring of Steve and movement downstairs. I slipped out of silently picking my gun out of the bedside cabinet. I moved down stairs and entered the kitchen to find Jamie with coffee pot in her hands.
“Oh, I was going to bring you some coffee up,” she grinned shyly holding the pot up so I could see it. I lowered the gun with a chuckle.
“Sorry, I’m not used to having people in the house,” I tucked the gun into the back of my shorts that I was wearing after Steve and I finally went to sleep.
“Oh, okay. Coffee?” she asked offering a cup to me.
“No. Not at the moment after I get in from my work out sure, can I get you some breakfast though?” I asked moving about the kitchen.
“Sure, do you have any cereal?” she asked picking a glass of juice from the worktop.
“Yup bottom cupboard, bowls above it and spoons in the middle. Help yourself, I’ll be out in garage come find me when you’re done,” I told her unlocking the back door and heading over to the two garages where I had one of them converted into a gym. I removed the oversized shirt, which left me in a sports bra and shorts I began my work out mainly sticking to the punch bag. I had been going at it for about half an hour when Jamie finally appeared.
“Hey, all finished?” I asked picking up my bottle of water and taking a drink.
“Yeah, you got anything I can do?” she asked, I figured that she was bored; which wasn’t any surprise there was nothing she could do here.
“What do you like doing?”
“Would you mind if I looked at your books, I love reading and I don’t think I have seen a collection so big that wasn’t in a library,” she asked pointing back towards the house.
“Of course, I’ve read them all but I don’t tend to have the time to read much anymore so you are very welcome to have a look at any of them,” I smiled, I was glad that she was a keen book reader, she may teach Steve something, I don’t think I saw a single book in his house.
“Thanks,” she disappeared again, so I continued with my workout.
I stopped to change the song that had just come, bending down to change the song someone grabbed me from the behind. Shooting back up, I turned and punched the person in the face and then stomach causing him to cripple over, and I brought my knee up and caught them squarely in the forehead before realising who it was.
“Shit Steve!” I cried dropping down to my knees where I could see him “Why the hell did you sneak up on me?” I rambled trying to get a look at his face, I could already see bruises forming and it wouldn’t be long before they doubled in size and then went black and blue.
“Surprise,” he coughed sitting down on the ground and then laying back.
“Why’s dad on the ground?” a curious Jamie asked from behind me.
“He umm, snuck up on me and I punched him,” I winced that really didn’t sound good.
“Why did you punch him?”
“Because he scarred me,” I grumbled looking down; I was slightly ashamed of myself. “Why don’t you go back to table and I’ll come over with your dad,” she walked out the garage heading back to the table where she sat patiently looking back at us waiting. “Steve I’m so sorry, let me help you up,” I grabbed his hands put my arm under his to support him, I helped him out the patio table where is at him down then running inside to grab some ice packs. When I got back to the table Jamie and Steve were talking.
