Chapter Sixteen

Doris McGarrett’s POV

I paced the same piece of floor for over two hours, back and forth back and forth; I repeated the motion until I knew every crack and cranny in Steve’s wooden floor. With a last heaving breath, I collapsed to the ground, and sat there thinking how I was going to be the death of my son.

Sapphire O’Loughlin POV

I watched Doris pacing across the room and I wondered how long it would be before we would see the foundations of the house. Danny and Kono were talking among themselves in the kitchen I could hear the low murmur of their voices as they spoke about to trying and find Steve. Jo he had gone, after he found out that Steve had figured out where Shelburne was he stormed out the house and we had not heard from him since. Looking outside I could see the rising on the horizon, I opened the door and stepped out onto the porch to finish watching it climbing the blue sky.
I heard footsteps behind me and turned to look who they were connected to “How you doing?” Danny asked standing next to me. I looked at him with an ‘are you being serious’ look and laughed. “That good then,” he said sarcastically. “We’ll find him.” I hoped he was right because I don’t know what I would do without him or Jamie for that, she had only just got him back and if he didn’t come back then she would be going back to her bitch of a mother.

“I really hope so Danny, I really hope so,” I wrapped my cardigan around me tighter, it wasn’t cold but; but I felt like I was going to freeze to death. “What time is it?” Danny looked down at his watch then mumbled that it was seven. “Jamie will be up soon,” I thought allowed. Turning around I walked back inside to see Doris sat on the floor with her head on her knees, Kono had come out the kitchen and was sat in the living room on the sofa snoring softly; I wish I could fall asleep so easily. I heard Danny chuckle to himself when he entered the building he too has seen Kono.

“Don’t you envy her?” he smiled rubbing his eyes and then running them though his hair, which was losing its usual, sleek and classy look.

“Don’t I just, coffee?” I offered before walking into the kitchen. Danny followed me in and stood in the doorway while I put a coffee pot on and grabbing some bread to put toast on. The coffee pot bleeped to say that I was ready, pouring three cups I handed two to Danny and motioned for him to take one to Doris, he disappeared but the door re-opened I looked round and saw Jamie stood there dressed in jeans and T-Shirt.

“Hey, where you off to?” I smirked walking over to her with my hands on my hips, I moved a stray piece of hair behind her ear.

“I want to help find dad,” she chirped, it completely broke my heart. She missed him just as much as me if not more; I could feel a tear slipping down my cheek as I took a breath to try and explain to her that she couldn’t do anything to help her Father.

“Baby girl, I’m so sorry but you can’t help him; you’ve got to leave it up to the grownups” Her face dropped and the tears started, they were waterfalls washing away any sort of happiness that she had left. I swept her into a hug, pulling her close feeling her little chest heaving against me. I tucked my face into her hair letting the tears fall free.  I heard the door open then an ‘oh shit,’ then it closed again, I smelt Danny before I felt his hand on my back, his aftershave was stronger than I realised and I wondered why I hadn’t picked it up before.

Taking my face out of Jamie’s hair I looked up at Danny’s sombre façade; there wasn’t much emotion being portrayed but I could see the hints of sadness in his eyes. Jamie pulled back, rubbed her red blotchy eyes until I pulled her hands away to stop her, she looked at me with teary eyes and told me that I needed to find her Dad.  I promised her that I would, but I didn’t tell her I couldn’t guarantee it meant I would be bring him home alive because if he didn’t get himself killed I would be killing him for going.

I took Jamie’s hand and lead her to one of the bar stools and sat her down while I moved about the kitchen getting her some breakfast, taking her and bowl of cereal out into the dining room; I sat her down and allowed to eat. Doris looked up at us and perked up as soon as she realised that I had Jamie, she moved to get up but I shook my head telling her no. After sorting Jamie out, I went over to Doris and pulled her outside.

“Leave her be,” I told her firmly, “she is total disarray at the minute over Steve;  I don’t need her more confused and unsettled after you tell her that you’re her grandmother.” Doris looked at my filthily and I knew she was about to come out at me with a tirade.

“How dare you, she is my granddaughter. I have every right to tell her who I am; you are nothing to her just some woman her father is seeing,” that stung, but instead of upsetting me it pissed me off well and truly. I stormed up to her moving her backwards so she was back up against the railing.

“Don’t you dare; I am the closest that girl has to a mother since hers abandoned her. I don’t give shit who you are, because you’re not really Steve’s mother since you walked out on him twenty years ago,” I snapped, “so you are most certainly not her Grandmother until you damn well earn it. I will protect that little girl with my life and I do not give rats arse who you are, because at this very minute I am looking for any excuse to kick your ass out on to that curb. Do you understand?” I was red in the face and out of breath, but I knew that I got my point across loud and clear. I could see that she wanted have ago back but thought twice about it.

“Fine,” she retorted, storming down the garden to a pair of chairs on the beach at the bottom. I watched go all the way and then sit there; I didn’t like that I had to be like this because I knew Steve would like nothing more than for Jamie to know her Grandmother. Still, I could not risk Jamie getting even more confused about what is happening, there is no guarantee that she will not disappear again, and I don’t want Jamie relying on someone who’s going to drop her at a moment’s notice.

I was finally starting to relax a little, just feeling a smidge of the weight that I was carry slide of, before all hell broke loose again. “Sapphire, get in here now!” Danny shouted though the glass door he looked panicked and alarmed; racing back into the house I found Jo White once again stood in Steve’s dining room.  Looking round the room to find the emergency I rested my eyes upon each person and saw no harm to them, Kono and Jamie were playing the living room and Danny and Jo were in the dining room, looking back at Danny with a confused I stood there waiting for an explanation. “Jo’s found him.”

I'm so sorry I left you on yet again another cliff hanger and that this chapter is soo short; Hopefully the next few will be longer and remember Chapter 18 could be the last.
