CATO POV
We couldn't stand around for too long, the fog was closing in on us on three sides. I pulled Finnick onto my back and took off running again. It was so much harder now, Finnick was much heavier than he looked. The hives began to crawl up my back but I still ran as fast as I could. I missed my footing and fell down a large hill, me and Finnick sprawling at the bottom in a heap. I stopped face up to see Brooke leaping over the side of the hill, landing 2 feet away from me. The fog creeped its way silently towards us, but I was out of energy. I closed my eyes, bracing myself for the wave of pain from the hives.
But it never came. When I opened my eyes, it was like the fog had hit a wall. It stopped not 1 foot away from Finnick. It seeped upwards towards the sky before evaporating into nothing. I heaved a sigh of relief before getting back to my feet.
"Cato, over here! The water helps!"
I turned around, Brooke was kneeled beside a small waterhole rubbing her hands vigorously in the dark water. Her hives were disappearing with every rub she did. I hobbled over and sat in the water, slowly immersing myself in the water. Painful, as it was, my hives were disappearing as quickly as they had appeared just moments before. When I was sure they were all gone, I got out of the water and made my way to Finnick. Grabbing hold of his arms, I dragged him to the water hole and pushed him under. He yelled out in pain but soon his moans subsided. I looked over at Brooke, who was holding her stomach.
"Are you okay? Is the baby...."
"The baby's fine I think. I can feel her moving."
"Thank god for that. We lost Mags, I don't think I could handle losing our baby too."
I made my way over to her and placed a hand on her stomach. She was moving all right. I closed my eyes and just felt my baby's movements. My baby.
"Guys, walk over here slowly."
I opened my eyes and looked around at the monkeys surrounding us.
"Mutts. Not again. I fucking hate these things."
Finnick made his way over to us, holding up his trident. The monkeys made no sound or movements. Finnick tried to scare them with the trident, that was a mistake. The mutts leapt at us baring their teeth, and we all turned and fled. Finnick stabbed a couple with his trident while me and Brooke ran towards the beach. I felt a furry hand hit me and I fell into a puddle of water. The mutt pushed me under the water and it was so hard to fight back. I could feel the breath coming out of me and I heard Brookes voice calling out my name.
"Cato! Cato!"
Suddenly the weight was off me and I was pulled from the water. A woman was on her back next to me, puncture wounds to her chest. Paint covered her face and her eyes were wide.
"A morphling! Help me get her!"
She started to wheeze as I wrapped my arms around her. She was heavier than she looked as Brooke tried to help me drag her to the beach. Finnick helped to keep the mutts away, waving his trident around crazily. Brooke and I took the morphing into the water, she just stared at nothing as she desperately tried to take a breath.
"Hey, Hey! Look up! Look up at the sky, isn't it beautiful? Concentrate on that ok?"
She was fading away fast, I could feel her body going limp as she floated on the water in my arms. The sky turned a dull shade of pink as the sunrise came up over the arena. The light left her eyes and I slowly let her drift on the water, the cannon signalling her death. As she floated further away from me and Brooke, a hovercraft reached a claw down and picked her lifeless body out of the water.
Brooke and I looked at each other as Finnick came to stand beside us. The mutts had retreated back into the jungle trees. The sun began to rise, showering us in vibrant yellow light as the hovercraft got smaller and smaller on the horizon. I reached my arms around Brooke and held her close to me.
"She sacrificed herself for me and I didn't even know her name. She never told me her name."
I couldn't hold back my tears any longer, they cascaded down my face and Brooke lead my head into her shoulder. I sobbed as the image of woman dying replayed over and over in my head.
I just wish I knew her name.
