The sun hung low in the sky as Toothless and the Light Fury touched down on the secluded island Hiccup had come to think of as “Fate’s Steppe.” The place where everything had changed for him, where he had met Elsa, and where his life had taken an unexpected turn. He had not shared the name with anyone—not even Elsa. It was something personal, something that connected him to the place in a way words could not capture.
As the dragons folded their wings, Hiccup slid off Toothless’ back, stretching out his limbs. He breathed in the crisp air, savoring the sense of peace that this place always brought him. The island was lush and green, a stark contrast to the harsh cliffs of Berk. The sounds of nature—the rustling of leaves in the gentle breeze, the distant call of seabirds, the soft babble of a nearby stream—created a soothing symphony that seemed to calm every nerve in his body.
“Finally,” Hiccup murmured, leaning against the small wooden table he had set up near the edge of the clearing. He closed his eyes, letting traces of magic flow to his ears, enhancing the natural sounds around him. For the first time in weeks, he felt truly at ease.
A soft weight pressed against his chest, and Hiccup opened his eyes to find Elsa leaning into him, her head resting against his heart. Instinctively, his arms encircled her, pulling her close. Her presence, warm and familiar, brought a sense of comfort that he could not find anywhere else.
“I’m so excited to have you to myself,” Elsa purred, her voice a soft whisper that sent a shiver down Hiccup’s spine.
“For a day at least,” Hiccup replied with a resigned sigh. He rested his chin on the top of her head, breathing in the faint scent of her hair—a delicate mix of snow and wildflowers.
Elsa tensed at his words, pulling back slightly to look up at him. There was a shadow in her eyes, something that had not been there before. She turned away, her hand reaching out to steady herself against the wooden wall of the small shelter Hiccup had built on the island.
“What’s wrong?” Hiccup asked, concern lacing his voice. He could feel a knot of anxiety tightening in his chest, the peaceful moment slipping away.
Elsa did not answer right away. She pressed her forehead against the rough wood, her shoulders trembling with the effort of holding herself together. Hiccup was about to ask again when she finally spoke, her voice strained and filled with pain.
“We need to talk, Hiccup.”
Hiccup flinched at the words. “No, no, no. Talking is what we’ve been doing for the last two weeks. Talking leads to work or bad news. Let’s do something besides talk,” he pleaded, stepping closer to her, his hand raised as if to physically stop the words he knew were coming. He had felt this moment approaching, a storm gathering on the horizon, but he had not wanted to acknowledge it.
Elsa turned back to him, her hand meeting his palm in a soft touch that sent sparks of magic through them both. Hiccup had learned to recognize that sensation—it was their magic touching, a connection that went beyond words.
“I am leaving with Luna tomorrow. It is time for us to go back,” she said gently, her voice carrying the weight of their shared pain.
“Time already, huh?” Hiccup forced the words out, his voice strained. He laced his fingers through hers, deepening the tingling sensation. He pulled her close again, her body fitting perfectly against his. “Are you sure we can’t get one more week?”
Elsa chuckled softly, the sound vibrating against his chest. She leaned back slightly, her eyes crinkling with mirth. “That is what you said last week. I do not really want to go, but I need to.” Her gaze dropped, unable to meet his eyes.
