Being dragged to Initiative wasn't fun. Not at all. The train passed through the Unfortunate Lands, where the poor lived. It made Mara feel sick especially since they were run out of their homes because they couldn't afford to pay their taxes.
"You know they're going to send us to the Trials, don't you?" Zoe whispered and Mara stared at the floor
"Yeah, I do. Don't believe the survivors, there's nothing great about the Trials, it's a nightmare compared to hell... or the nineties" Mara said quietly
"We won't survive" Zoe said solemnly and Mara closed her eyes
"No, probably not" Mara sighed, the reality of what was to come crashed down on her shoulders like the weight of a building
"It's only going to get worse. We're being taken to Martin Carleton by his soldiers, where we'll be tortured, Kara's probably going to be dead and then we'll be sent to the Trials" Zoe said solemnly, the weight just got even heavier
"Yep" Mara said popping the p
"Please, be more enthusiastic" Kylie said sarcastically from beside Mara
"Save me the bullshit" Mara said as she leant her head back
"Since when did you stop caring" Billy asked and Mara rolled her eyes
"I never stopped caring. I just don't whine about the smallest inconvenience" Mara said calmly
"I don't get it. How is she so calm?" Ollie asked with a scoff
"She already knows her fate" Jason said, his tone remained neutral as usual
"What?" they all exclaimed, Mara stayed silent, she knew there was nothing to say that would help them understand
"How is it that she knows?" Zoe asked
"There's nothing that I can say or do that will help you understand" Mara said bitterly as the train stopped
"Can anything be explained?" Kylie asked as she stood up along with everyone else
"No" Mara answered bluntly
