"Finally! after almost two days we've finally arrived Abuja". I exclaimed when my family and I alighted from the plane. We boarded an airport taxi and my father gave the driver the address. The drive home was quiet again and I simply looked through the window to observe the beautiful scenery of Abuja. We passed by a gate-like structure with the inscription that read 'WELCOME TO ABUJA'. The structure was painted white and had the painting of the Nigerian flag at the top of it. From what I researched about Nigeria, Abuja was the country's capital city and owing to what I'd seen so far, Abuja was indeed a beautiful city.
The driver finally stopped at a very beautiful, large white gate. As soon as my father opened the gate, I was dumbfounded. The house was a white mansion, magnificent and breath taking. I couldn't believe that was our house. I shot a look at my mother and saw she had the same kind of look I had on my face few seconds ago. I quickly took my mother's hand and squeezed it, she had a questionable look on her face as well and as she looked back at me I asked if it was our house. She'd replied in affirmative and couldn't hide her shock either. Well well, seems like my father made good use of the money he made as profit from selling those illegal drugs I actually rolled my eyes at that thought.
My father opened the door to the house and the interior decoration of the house was very simply exquisite. The color of the couches were white, the walls were painted white as well. There was a forty two inch LG plasma television hung on the wall. I quickly ran to the kitchen and the cupboards were also painted white. The kitchen was spacious and beautiful and as I walked out of the kitchen into the sitting room and glanced up at the ceiling, it had a nice looking gold chandelier. After observing the sitting room for about five minutes, I quickly went in search of my parents. I went upstairs and there was a smaller living room leading to different doors, I assumed those doors led to the bedrooms. I heard voices and I quickly followed the voices to an open room. I found my mother talking to my father and asked no one in particular where my room was he turned and said it was at the far end of the corridor I nodded and left smiling.
When I opened my room I felt my eyes pop out of my face. It had a king-sized bed at the far end of the room with one side of the wall covered with a grey, black and white coloured wall paper it had an artistic design on it. The rest of the room was painted off-white, I looked up at the ceiling and there was another beautiful silver chandelier on it. There was a door that led to my closet which housed a gigantic wadrobe and a high empty shoe rack. I pinched myself to be sure it was a reality and I wasn't dreaming. I never dreamt I would ever in my life live in a house as big as this. Our house in California was big but it couldn't be compared to this house.
My mom's cough distracted me from my thoughts and drifted me back to reality. "Riele?". I heard my mom call my name.
"Mom, I am so happy. This is unbelievable!!" I squealed.
" I know right your father really took us by surprise" I saw the glimmer in her eyes as she replied.
"Lizzy can we go now!!". I heard my father yell at my mother. It's really strange how my parents call themselves by their names, when couples tend to have nicknames. I shrugged at the thought.
"Uhm Riele, your father and I are going to buy us something to eat for dinner, please take care of the house and stay safe". My mom said and I simply nodded. My mom quickly hurried off to catch up with my father.
As soon as they left I continued to tour the house

Few hours later, I was still arranging my stuff where they were supposed to be. I wondered what was taking my parents so long to get back home. I would have called my mother to know what went wrong, but I didn't have a Nigeria number thus I made a mental note to register a new sim card before the end of the week. I heard the gate open and rushed to peek when I saw a white Range Rover driving into the compound and parking in front of the house. I looked closer and saw a figure that looked like my mom and that was when it dawned on me that my father had bought a car. I was so elated that I quickly ran from my room taking the stairs two at a time to welcome my parents. I gave my mom a big hug and then I quickly hugged my father he was laughing softly. I carried the Chicken Republic cellophane bags while my parents carried the grocery baskets inside. I didn't need a prophet to explain that my parents had gone to purchase foodstuff as well.
I quietly followed my parents to the kitchen and watched them keep all the food stuff in the storeroom in the kitchen. As I stood there watching, my mom handed me a jumbo sized cellophane bag and told me it contained all the toiletries I'd need. I went to my room and kept them all in an empty drawer as I presumed they belonged and returned downstairs. I arrived just in time to see my mother place the food on the dining table. My father was already sitting down and I slipped into a chair too. We ate dinner in silence till my father cleared his throat and began...
" We are having visitors tomorrow Riele;... he paused a little as if to see my reaction then went on ...your mom's and my old friends are coming to welcome us back tomorrow. A few family members living within Abuja are also coming tomorrow so I'll advice you sleep on time, to enable you wake up early and help your mother prepare to receive the visitors". As soon as he was done talking, he quietly stood up and left me alone with my mom.
"Riele darling, how are you feeling?" My mom started. " To be honest, I am happy and at the same time exhausted", I replied.
"Alright go to bed, so your can wake up on time tomorrow". I nodded and followed my mother's instructions. Immediately I got to my room, I shut my door and laid on the bed, my very comfortable bed. It felt welcoming. I remembered my friend Danielle as I started drifting off to sleep and felt guilty for not texting her. Danielle was my best friend, the only sibling I never had, but it was not my fault I was exhausted from the journey and needed to get a new SIM card with the Nigerian registered dial code. My eyes felt really heavy but I didn't struggle this time, I closed my eyes and succumbed to a dreamless sleep.
