As dusk turned to dawn, the clouds produced an unrelenting, unforgiving wind and rainfall that torrented against the windows. I spent a lot of time curled into Chanyeol's bed on the side that he slept last night, thinking about the distance he had put between us. Since today was busy, I barely had time to reflect on many of the moments that came about during the night. A lingering silence had ensued between us as Chanyeol turned to face the cupboard, laying as close to the edge as possible. All I had wanted was to close that space and bury myself against him, but that would have been too much for him.
And then today, from morning and until the moment he left to his work function, he had not made any attempts to approach me. He did not kiss nor hold me again. Now and then, the reality of our situation would begin to slowly sink in, but then I'd brush it aside because too many emotions would only allow a headache to fester.
The picture of a smiling and gentle Jaemin popped in my mind, and I realized that I had not contacted her in more than a day. Had I even responded about my medication? I was so caught up in my pursuit of Chanyeol that I had neglected to think about other people who cared for me. I went to Chanyeol's room and wrapped myself in one of his thick and warm night gowns before retrieving my phone and settling back down on the couch. I snuggled down and phoned Jaemin.
"Haneul?" she answered after the fourth ring. "Haneul, are you doing fine?"
"Hi Jaemin," I answered, unable to help but smile that that was her first concern. "Yes, I'm fine. And how are you all doing?"
"We're the same," she said. "Did you see my text message? That there is an earlier neurology appointment available at eight-fifteen tomorrow morning. They'll check that your brain is fine, and you will be able to ask questions to get an idea about amnesia."
"Oh?" I said, pulling my phone down and looking at the screen. I could see the text message icon had a tiny number two appear above it. Quickly opening it, I could see that she had in fact messaged me and that I had been too caught up today to notice it. "I had not seen it, but I would like to attend."
"Okay," she said. "Dr. Sai is due back for his rounds shortly so I will pass that on then and make sure you can still be scheduled in since this invitation was from last night."
"Ah, I apologize," I said. "I was never good at remembering my phone even before I ended up like this." There was never a need because Chanyeol was always by my side.
"I understand," she said. "You can come straight to Jung-ho's room if you get here early."
"Thank you," I said.
She quieted for a moment. "I trust you have shelter right now," she said, contemplatively. "Be safe in this storm and remember to let us know as soon as you need a place to stay. Our offer remains."
"Thank you," I said again. "Be safe and have a good night."
We ended the call and I brought up the messages. There was one from her, but there was also one from an unknown number that had not been sent too long ago. Only in the past ten minutes. I opened it and read the words: take me home, I'm drunk. Grand Hyatt S. My heartrate picked up. Was it possible that this could be Chanyeol? I wondered how he could have gotten this number. Maybe at the police station, or perhaps he had searched for it through this phone. Chanyeol appeared capable of many things, and finding a number seemed to be the least of them.
