"No one can guarantee that you will get the job, so fill the requirement!" announced a man from a Gold Rush commercial. Sonia rode the subway each day and heard the same commercial, reminding her that she was a failure. As a child, her parents pushed her to the best as most parents would. Their ambition was their downfall. They didn't understand that if you push the child too much, they would reach their limit and eventually fall off the cliff. To them, Sonia was merely a decoration. She was a way to display how great they were. That's the reason she has always been uncomfortable around them, because of them she became a gifted burn-out. She had to appear as perfect as possible and not embarrass them.
The train stopped at the North Station and Sonia got off. She was going to be late for class but why should she care? She was a disappoint. She only promised she would go to school so she could get away from her parents.
"Where are you?" texted her classmate, Gabriel.
Gabriel was probably the only person with stricter parents that Sonia. Gabriel had helicopter parents, meaning that they basically watched his every move so that's what they bonded over. They had met as children, when Gabriel's family invited Sonia and her parents to a housewarming party.
"Give me a second. I need to verify what classes I have." Sonia texted back.
Sonia made her way up the stairs and onto 5th Street. She was swiping through her notifications, when she noticed she got a text from her mother from a few minutes before.
It said, "Sonia. You have to come to the hospital. Your dad got hit by a moving vehicle."
Why should she? They never showed any appreciation towards her. Not a single day in her life was she shown love or care by her parents.
Ding!
Sonia looked down again. There was a new message.
Gabriel texted, "Sonia, you're going the miss the announcement the dean is gonna make."
Instead of replying, she called Gabriel.
Within 5 seconds Gabriel picked up and asked, "Where are you, Sonia?
"I'm on 5th right now but something urgent came up. Please inform our professor that I won't be coming to class today. I'll see you later."
"Wait what?! Where- "
Sonia hung up before he could speak. Sonia hurrily waved down a taxi and told the driver to go the the hospital on Jenkins street, tears running down her face as she gave her directions. Despite the resentment she held against them, they were still her parents. Even if the love she had for them wasn't returned.
