Makenzie's POV

The next morning I walked into my class, it was Calculus, one of my favorites 🙄 but I shouldn't complain i did choose this as an extracurricular. I was good at numbers and remembering so this class bored me to 😢

I sat down in my seat as the professor prepared to give her lecture. I tried to pay attention but my mind wandered, I had ignored the others. They had called periodically through the night. Naturally I didn't sleep a wink, I was so tired, tired physically, and emotionally.

I stared numbly, my brain hurt and yet it was filled with fog. I tried to not think about things.
"Focus Kenzie. You need to focus"
I clenched my fist and quickly rubbed my eyes.

"Is something a matter Miss Carver?"
I blinked
"No! No Professor Spires, I just haven't been sleeping well lately." I said feeling embarrassed. A slight heat brushed my cheeks.

"See to it that you go to bed at a godly hour of the night from now on."

"Yes ma'am" I said ducking my head.

She continued to the lesson.

Later that day.....

I was headed to my last class of the day, it was Tuesday so I had a two hour long class, of one of two of my Forensics Classes  this semester. It was the end of the spring semester in my junior year.

I was just drifting almost, I couldn't focus...

I entered the class room, we had a lab today.  The professor of the class was honorably discharged from the CPD after getting injured in a case. He had worked as a police detective for 11 yrs. He had worked his way up rapidly and still had great connections with the CPD (Chicago Police Department). He worked as a consultant on occasion.

As a result, we, his students were privy to case evidence (previously solved ) and even some from cold cases. To further our education and help fill in the demand for ET's (evidence technician) without having to pay us. We also sometimes got bodies from the morgue at the hospitals to see what people died from- that sort of thing.

    .....................................................................

We were in the lab...
"Can anybody tell me what we have here?"
"A body" someone joked.
"Subject:male, Age: 43, height: 6feet 3 inches and 7 centimeters.  Status: deceased COD: Intracranial hemorrhage due to contusion in the cerebral cortex.  Injury was caused by a motor vehicle accident. The subject was unconscious upon arrival of  emergency services. Was brought by ambulance to St. Bernards hospital. Patient fell into a coma and finally due to brain damage and hemorrhaging died. While Flatlining and cerebral death - was pronounced dead at 1:53 am Tuesday, April 19 2017.

Everyone turned and blinked at me.
"Yes, good job Miss Carver ." Professor Tyrall praised. I rarely talked, in any of my classes, Especially without being called upon.

"What the hell? How did you do that?" A classmate of mine asked flabbergasted.

"Well I'm looking at the data and I used my brain." I retorted.

"Thank you Makenzie, Daniel please, since you are seem so excited to share please do."

"Well..." the student, Daniel the implication due to Professor Tyrall's comment, stuttered for a minute .

"How does she know, she seemed to be implying a lot, we don't have all the data. Because... *cough cough* using my brain. The patient clearly had a TBI but a hematoma?" What about a Coup- Contrecoup? There seems to be swelling in the Occipital Lobe. And I see no evidence of hemorrhaging..."

I placed my finger down on the diagram, showing exactly what I meant.

"I said cause of death not that the subject didn't have any other injuries. In fact he did have minor contusion on his occipital lobe. He also had two broken ribs, a hairline fracture in his right femur, a fracture in his left humorous and his left clavicle was broken. Those where just internal injuries, external injuries include abrasions and suffered from ecchymosis all over his body."

The class stared at me dumbfounded. I shrugged feeling uncomfortable and I shrunk down in my seat.

The rest of class went on as usual and I stayed silent. As soon as class ended I rushed out of the room.

I had just exited the building right into a small park like area, when I heard

"Makenzie wait! Hey Makenzie.... Makenzie."
I heard some huffs and turned to see the Daniel dude.

I kind of froze.

"Hey... he huffed a little more. " I wanted to talk to you."

"Okay...?"

"What you said back there was pretty impressive."

"Thanks"

"Oh I'm Daniel Reed."

"I'm um Makenzie."

"Yeah I know" he smiled "yah know I've seen you around before but your always by yourself."

I nodded a little.

"I have some friends I'm going to hang out with do you want to come?"

Again I froze

"Um," I gulped, "sure"

"Great you can come in your car and follow me or you can ride with other me if you want?"

"Welp it looks like your car."

"Wha??"

"I don't have one."

"Oh." His surprise lasted a nanosecond "okay! Follow me."

And i did.... what the heck am I getting myself into now.......
