iv. six days before
Luke walked out of school grumpily with Calum and while Calum talked, Luke felt the strange urge to strangle the fuck out of him. He didn't know why, but he was just so angry. For the rest of the day after lunch, he couldn't shake the feeling. The whole world was pissing him off and there was a feeling in the pit of his stomach that made his stomach churn with frustration and he couldn't find out the cause of it. It was particularly directed at Calum, but he didn't know why.
All he knew is that he hated the fact that Calum was Ashton's knight in shining armor and made Luke look like the bad guy. Calum isn't so innocent, and Ashton goes and thanks him. Him?! Luke didn't understand it.
And no-- before you ask, Luke was not jealous. Not jealous of the admiring look in Ashton's eyes and the sincerity in his voice, all directed at Calum. Or how genuine Ashton's smile was, a smile Luke had never seen on Ashton and he liked the look of it.
No, he was definitely not jealous.
Luke and Calum made it to Luke's car-- Luke's family had it pretty great when it came to money. Therefore, Luke having a slick, black BMW was no big whoop. If you're in the Hemmings family, of course.
Luke swung the door open and angrily slammed it shut, aggressively buckling his seatbelt and putting his keys into the ignition, grumbling frustratedly when he missed the slot the first time. Calum watched the scene unfold with amusement in his eyes, knowing what was up with Luke instantaneously.
"You're jealous," Calum deadpanned, not bothering to beat around the bush. Both boys knew Calum was right anyways, but only one was admitting it.
You can guess which boy that was.
"J-Jealous? Hah, funny. Of what? I've got girls drooling over me and guys wanting to be me. I don't think I'm jealous," Luke tried, but his voice betrayed him. Honestly, Luke didn't even think he sounded believable himself.
"Of me. Jealous of me and the attention Ashton gave me, and not you." Calum smirked victoriously when he saw Luke stiffen, his face growing red with anger as he tried composing himself. Calum wanted to get the truth out of Luke even if he knew it already. Calum just really wanted to hear Luke say it. "The fact that Ashton smiled right at me and didn't spare you a second glance. That Ashton thanked me, hell, praised me. That I made Ashton smile his award winning smile, and you didn't. You're jealous, Hemmings."
Luke was practically fuming at that point. "I'm not jealous!" He yelled, slamming his fist onto the steering wheel, startling many students that were making their way through the parking lot. Luke blushed under their eyes, slouching in his seat a bit.
"I'm not jealous," Luke mumbled, cheeks still tinted pink with embarrassment.
"Yes, you are."
"No, I'm not."
"Yes, you are,"
"No, I'm not!"
"Yes, you are!"
"Yes, I am!" Luke groaned, sighing in defeat and letting his head fall against the steering wheel, careful not to honk the horn this time.
"Hah! I knew it," Calum cheered, very pleased with himself at the moment. Luke glared, obviously wanting to forget this whole thing and Calum understood. For now, at least. So together they drove back to Luke's house, his car silent but his thoughts screaming out.
