Steve went back into the bathroom to do more investigating. Or maybe peeing. I went to help Mom and Tammy set up flashlights to keep the house lit without power.
Mom was visibly sobbing. Tammy was barely managing to keep it together. I was in denial, but I still found tears running down my face.
Mom and Tammy hugged me.
"Don't worry," said Mom. "We'll get through this."
"Yeah," I sighed, "I'll find the murderer."
"Toby," said Tammy, "I don't think that it was a murder."
Right on cue, we heard another scream. We rushed to the kitchen, where the scream came from.
Pete was the one screaming again. But this time, it was Bella who was dead. The maid was lying dead on the floor. There was a knife in her stomach and her blood was draining on the kitchen floor. Her eyes were frozen in a look that could only be described as pure terror.
And Pete fainted. Mom would have fainted too if it weren't for Tammy supporting her. I was horrified. The look of a real bloody and dead body was worse than all of the mystery books have ever described it. I don't even want to describe this!
Steve was on the case. "This," he exclaimed, "was obviously a murder."
"No shirt Sherlock!" I exclaimed.
"Shirt?" asked Steve, clearly befuddled.
"Yes!" I said. "That's what you say when someone states the obvious!"
Steve had understood what I meant. "No, I believe the phrase was--eh never mind you are too young to know the true phrase."
"It's the end!!!" cried Great Uncle Bill. He ran up to Steve. "Fix it!!! Use your detective powers! I'm too old to be murdered!"
Grandma took a deep breath. "We have to remain completely calm and get out of this situation in a logical and orderly fashion. We must all remain together so the murderer can't strike again."
Mom had had enough. She grabbed me and Tammy by the wrist and said, "Nope! Nope! This is crazy. We're out of here." She opened the door and a gust of wind blew into her face, carrying a lot of snow with it.
Mom closed the door and freaked out. "Oh my gosh! We can't leave! We're trapped!" She freaked out and ran away.
The chain reaction was too strong for the feeble adults to resist. They all freaked out, running every which way, leaving only me, Steve, and Grandma in the room with the dead maid.
Grandma sighed, "I'm going to go try to calm everyone down. You guys solve the mystery, ok?"
