Mom's face tightened up. "Uncle Bill, what did you do?"
Great Uncle Bill's sweat was much more prominent than before. "Uh, well. So. Uh. I didn't know you weren't still together with John--"
Right on cue, a man showed up.
"JOHN!" my mother cried.
"LINA?" said the man, John.
And Tammy, who had been quiet up until then, spoke up. "John. Like, John, John. John as in Toby's dad. John as in your ex?"
Mom bit her lips. "John, John."
Personally, I could have cared less about John. John wasn't there when I grew up. Tammy was. And I loved Tammy.
The three adults stared at each other. I guessed this was because of some sort of adulty stuff.
"Well..." said Thompson, attempting to cut through the awkwardness, "Let's meet up with the rest of the guests."
We entered the house. The house was even more amazing on the inside than the outside. When you stepped in the house, you could practically smell the last century. Today, the house had been cleaned up and polished just for the occasion. But it wasn't just the house that made me so ecstatic, I saw him.
"Detective Steve Witherman?!" I cried. Detective Steve Witherman was my idol. He was a distant relative of mine who had solved the famous turtle smuggling case of Iceland.
"Who are you, sport?" asked Detective Steve Witherman.
I believe I said something like, "ImTobiasErnshack,ucancallme Toby,Ithinkwererelated!"
"I'm sorry," said Detective Steve Witherman. "Can you say that again?"
I took a deep breath and tried to calm my nerves. I started over. "I believe we are related."
"Oh?" said Detective Steve Witherman, "How so?"
"I'm Tobias Ernshack, I'm related to him" I pointed to Great Uncle Bill, "her" I pointed to my mom, "and her" I pointed to my grandma. "I also believe that I am related to you."
Detective Steve Witherman laughed. "You are right! We are related! Your Great Uncle Bill, my second cousin's uncle, told me all about you. You know what Toby, you can call me Steve."
I gasped. "Steve, I've always wanted to be a
detective, just like you!""Haha! I shall do my best to train you!" said Steve.
Wow, I couldn't believe it! Detective training!
